“Reading the Snow” By Patricia Feltz
Watching the forecasts in late fall in Alta, Wyoming is an obsession. The air has to be cold enough and the wind speeds gentle enough to produce light layers of fluffy snow that will be deep enough to cover the sticks and stones of everyday life. Last year’s gear must be reorganized so as not to miss an essential item. Hopefully, packs are put away at the end of each season containing the required items. One doesn’t want to forget important gear for an early season ski that could result in a missed opportunity to explore a bright, beautiful, sunny trail.
And Nordic in Alta, Wyoming provides the best of two worlds. Alta offers a regularly groomed track that goes on forever, right next to a branch of the Teton County Library with both a free book exchange and regular library checkouts. The library bathroom is an added convenience for readers as well as skiers.
During regular library hours I am careful not to park directly in front of the library. My cross-country ski boots unlike downhill boots are easily worn while driving a car. I step out of my car, walk around to the trunk, and take out my skis, poles, and carefully prepared pack. My pack contains extra warm clothing, mainly for my head and hands, sunscreen, lip gloss, and sunglasses. I also carry water and peanut butter biscuits just in case. Additionally, I can stuff my pack with the clothing layers I take off when I overheat. I generally take to the trail on the groomed track. Occasionally, I break my own trail in newly fallen, powdery snow. Other times I’m grateful for skiers breaking trail ahead of me. I climb hills leaning forward, speeding up my momentum so as not to slide backwards. Going downhill I twist all the way down to my hips and lean into the turn. Sometimes I use my poles to slow down a speedy descent or to aid my turns. Sometimes wishing to go faster I duck down, lower my center of gravity and go with the prevailing wind. Lacking numerous trees, the Alta Nordic area is the best around for dipping, gliding, and soaring up and down hills the way swallows do in the wind.
Other lovers of x-country skiing and sometimes their dogs, are a welcome addition to the beautiful backdrop of the Teton Mountains and the undulating snow-covered terrain. Friends greet friends, and new acquaintances talk about the weather, equipment, and the “nuts and bolts” of cross-country skiing. I value the difference in Nordic versus downhill skiing in that there are, in my experience, fewer accidents or at least fewer collisions; no lift lines and no heavy gear. You can easily avoid holiday crowds on Nordic skis and there is the advantage of choosing to go slow enough to enjoy the scenery or fast enough to fly like a bird.
Consider cross-country in Alta, Wyoming and dip and glide like a swallow! And don’t forget while you are visiting to check out our books.

Countdown to The JH Nordic Annual Event!
We haven’t hosted this event in two years and we are so excited to invite you to join this 5th Annual FREE Nordic Community Event at Turpin Meadow Ranch on Sunday, January 8th, 2023! We are just 6 days away from the event so to celebrate let’s countdown with 7 reasons to attend (a new reason will be featured each day this week).
Nordic Luminary: Jim Roscoe
The editorial board at JHNordic.com, after much discussion, has come up with this definition of a Nordic luminary—a local Nordic skier who has both accomplished great things in Nordic skiing as well as contributed to the local Nordic community. Jim Roscoe is one such person.
“Tone it down,” Jim said… “I just stumbled into this. Don’t make me out to be anything special.”
I asked Jim what he would suggest to people just getting into cross country. He recommends just getting out there and trying some of the excellent groomed Nordic tracks in the valley and supporting their grooming efforts. Coaching for kids and good lessons for grownups new to the sport are good ideas also.
I enjoyed getting to know Jim Roscoe better. He is an interesting and modest guy. And—don’t listen to him—he truly is one of Jackson Hole’s Nordic luminaries.

Happy New Year!
May 2023 bring a groomed path to a bright future, and plenty of great Nordic skiing as well! Trail Creek Nordic Center and the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard will do what we can to ensure the latter.
If you were celebrating last night, what better thing to do than grab your Nordic skis, and head out to Trail Creek for a great spin around the trails. While the forecast is still calling for 1-3 inches today, so far it isn’t happening. While 1-2 inches have fallen since yesterday’s grooming, it was just enough to make things nice and fresh.
The Husky made an early morning start today, covering pretty much every trail with a classic/skate pass. The Close Field and Moose Loop did receive additional skate passes. The recent snow has firmed nicely and you should find plenty of joy on your New Year’s ski!
A note; things get crazy this week beginning Monday, when the entire line up of JHSC teams from Lollipoppers to Comps all are on the snow, let the spectacle begin!
Groomer’s choice for today is laps around Moose Loop.

Poor grooming conditions. machine tracks were digging deep into the base and the tiller could not cover them up without causing other issues because of all the rain and warm temperatures yesterday. Skiing will be somewhat poor with uneven conditions. The next few days are forecasted to be colder so the bases should firm up allowing me to groom on Friday.
