WILD NATURE

by Cathy Shill, founder of The Hole Hiking Experience
https://www.holehike.com/

With the most tour locations, we adapt the day to current conditions. Join the naturalists with The Hole Hiking Experience on the trail to discover winter, wildlife, and the beauty of Jackson Hole.

“Winter is nature’s sleep.” -H.S. Jacobs

After a dry December, snow has returned to Jackson Hole. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort reported over 40 inches of fresh, mountain snow during the last storm cycle and another system is heading our way. Great news since most of the annual moisture comes during the winter, and we are currently about 74% of average mountain snowfall.

When nature changes, all organisms must adjust to survive. Seasonal changes can be quite stressful. Without enough valley snowfall to insulate the ground, plants and insects can die. Drastic temperature fluctuations stress wildlife.  All species “harden” to winter and having steady, slow change is best.

Mild temperatures then extreme cold can kill animals and plants. Frigid temperatures this week in the northern United States and Canada stress livestock, crops, and the natural world.

Plants will harden with cooling temperatures so change needs to be gradual. For each species, the killing temperature is that “temperature below freezing necessary to kill the plant on any given date. Freezing resistance in the cell is the result of water moving out of the cell to growing intercellular crystals.” James Halfpenny, Winter: An Ecological Handbook.  Steady cooling helps plants harden and prepare for winter weather. It is believed lipids replace water in the cells, so cells are less threatened by ice crystals puncturing the cell wall. Freeze resistance and tolerance are time dependent so abrupt cold snaps can kill plants that were doing well. Without snow and its’ insulation, winter wheat grown in Montana will be affected by recent frigid temperatures.

The snowpack also shows the instability of winter weather and avalanche danger is high. If journeying into the backcountry, be careful and conservative. Nordic trails are great right now and as the snow deepens, our team of naturalists explore more freely. Join us to experience Grand Teton Park and the solitude of winter. You can’t beat it.

Avalanche Danger Remains High

Avalanche danger remains very dangerous in the backcountry due to an unusually weak snowpack from Wednesday, January 17, 2024 – 5:30PM to Friday, January 19, 2024 – 10:00PM.

Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Avalanches may be triggered remotely—from flat terrain above, below, and to the sides of steep slopes. Avalanches may involve deeper weak layers of snow and produce a larger avalanche than expected. Avalanches could run onto low angle terrain, hitting paths, roads or groomed snowmobile trails.

Nordic and winter trail users are urged to use caution when recreating on trails and terrain below steep slopes. We also suggest you:

  • Have a plan before you go—and stick to it.
  • Tell someone where you are going, and approximately when you will be back.
  • Carry food, water and an extra warm layer.
  • Always take a charged cell phone and have it within reach. Put in low power mode and keep your phone in a warm place to conserve battery.

Seriously Leaden Sky!
What started as an ominous gray over the pass with the ridge tops shrouded in clouds has dropped down the canyon in the form of moderate snowfall at Trail Creek today.  Overnight, three to four inches had already fallen with another foot or so supposed to come in the next 36 hours.

Many thanks to Coach Libby for sending in some Teewinot pictures from yesterday’s session; the sunshine and finally abundant snow appear to have resulted in lots of smiles.  As of report time, Colter Winter Sports programs kids were cruising through the falling snow on the snow at Trail Creek, resulting in lots of ski tracks on the fresh groom.

That grooming happened this morning with the Husky and covered almost every trail.  In light of anticipated heavy snowfall, the main mission du jour was a single skate/classic pass with multiple passes in the Close Field.  Thanks to the width of our Husky, skiers should be able to find nice skiing today not matter what their technique.

Groomer’s choice for today is a long snowy cruise through the woods.

Teton Co./Jackson Parks & Rec

Last Update: 1/17
Staff will be packing Emily’s Levee and Stilson 1/18 with the snowmobile. Staff worked with service tech over the phone today and still no progress on the PistenBully. We will see how the next storm comes and try to do Cache and Game on Friday if conditions allow.

Staff packed the High School fields, May Park, and Jackson Elementary school 1/17. We are still utilizing the snowmobile and pull behind so staff made several laps on each to try and get a firm surface. All should be in decent shape.

Looks like it will be storm skiing for the next couple of days. Snow has been falling steadily though it hasn’t amounted to much as of report time (9:30 on Wednesday January 17). The pisten bully went over the flats and a single pass with the ginzu was done in the hills. Conditions will be a little soft for biking. It is a quiet and peaceful day for a little tour.
