Trip Report: Taggart to Lupine Meadows via Lucas Fabian Cabins
Just got back from xc skiing Taggart to Lupine Meadows via the skier track/ Lucas Fabian cabins, then return via the road. The skier track was well established, but with warm temps, we stopped often to scrap our skis, in spite of having just waxed. Sticky through the meadows and woods along beautiful Cottonwood Creek. Once we passed Lucas Fabian Cabins ( water and food stop) we had another mile of pre-existing skier track, then broke our own trail through fresh snow up near Lupine Meadows for about a mile.
The changing cloudscapes in the crayons of the Tetons directly overhead made for dramatic skies. The winter sun emerged from time to time..
Nice to have the freshly groomed road for the return! 9 miles total.
Skiing on Frozen Lakes…
Below is an image taken of Phelps Lake on Sunday, January 15. The park ranger did not know if the lake was safe for cross country skiing but they did say they monitor Jackson Lake and it is safe for ice fishing and XC skiing as long as one does not wander too far out from the shore. We recommend checking with GTNP before skiing onto any lake. Skiing across rivers and creeks is not recommended due to flowing water and warm temps.
TODAY: Free Admission to Grand Teton National Park in Honor of MLK Day
As reported on Buckrail: the National Park Service will waive entrance fees at all sites on Monday, Jan. 16 in honor of MLK Day/Equality Day.
Commemorated on the third Monday of January, MLK Day/Equality Day is a day to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and legacy. In the U.S. this is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
“The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.” – Coretta Scott King
Announcing the First Ever On Snow Turpin Triathlon!
By now it is well known that the folks at Turpin Meadow Ranch like to have a good time (night skis, the JH Nordic Annual Free Event, full moon skis + fondue, etc.). To continue the series of good times had by all on snow the team at TMR is hosting their first ever Turpin Triathlon on Saturday, January 28. This is a friendly competition. There will be prizes but the point is to get outside and glide with other community members, maybe even get some folks who are “Nordic curious” involved in a low cost fun competition.
This merrymaking event is like a triathlon, but snowy. Instead of a swim you’ll be skate skiing (by the way, does anyone else’s fitness tracker think they’re swimming when they’re indeed skate skiing?), the biking is the same but on snow, and the classic ski will represent the run. You’re welcome to do the whole thing as an individual OR put together a team of up to 3 people.
The course will be a 2 mile skate ski in the hills (total ascent of 185′), 2.4 mile fat tire bike around the summer homes loop, and a 2 mile classic ski (same track as the skate). For those of you who are familiar with our track the ski loops will leave from the lodge down the willows straight away to the mule loop, climb the mule loop hill to the connector trail, take the connector trail to the lower pasture and turn right at the first jct. with the lower pasture loop, turn left at the connector trail junction, turn right to head towards home, finally a left to head back to the lodge.
Registration is $15 per person; additional charges if you need to rent skis or a bike. To register please email activities@turpinmeadowranch.com. Race day is Saturday, January 28. 9AM check in, 10AM race start.
Tomorrow: Eat Pizza for a Purpose!
You’re invited to hang out with The Friends of the Bridger-Teton at Handfire Pizza on Tuesday January 17th from 5PM-close. A portion of all sales will go to help the friends group purchase fire rings for the North Zone of the Bridger-Teton (that’s the Jackson and Buffalo ranger districts). In addition to pizza with a purpose, there will be swag, prizes, and fun!

Keep on Skiing!
Today would be a great day to keep on skiing at Trail Creek! After an early morning start, the Husky has covered nearly every trail with fresh grooming. Most trails in the woods received a single skate/classic pass while the fields received multiple passes with one or two fresh classic tracks. There was about 2 inches of snow overnight which is continuing today. However, today’s snowfall rate is on the light side with only about a quarter inch per hour falling with basically calm winds.
Temps have actually dropped a bit from near freezing earlier in the day so most likely skaters and classic skiers will find nothing but joy on their outing.
Racing wrapped up in Lander yesterday with strong showings for our local racers. The results can be viewed here; articles detailing the racing can be found on the Cody Enterprise website or on Wyopreps.com.
Groomer’s choice for today is the East Fields.

It’s Friday the 13th and Nordic conditions are scary good! Expect warmer temperatures and light snow showers through Monday. Please note that the snowcat/pistenbully’s joystick for controlling the front plow blade malfunction today and we should have a new joystick here sometime next week. With the current forecast, skiers likely won’t notice any difference with conditions while we wait on the part. Where the blade is vital, is during drifty/heavy snow events or when icy conditions develop, and we’ll send additional updates if this occurs. Daily grooming will continue as normal, just we won’t be able to aggressively use our front blade for several days. Overall, skiing should be very enjoyable.
Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Both classic and skate tracks were reset. Skating should be great if it doesn’t get too warm. Classic track will probably be soft but ski well. Single track was also freshen’d up…watch over by cell towers and home run fence as it is soft. Enjoy
