Friends of BT- January Happenings

Last month we held a panel to engage with some of our partners; this month we’re co-hosting (with the BTNF) a symposium for the communities around the BTNF about why the upcoming BTNF Forest Plan update is important, and how community members can be a part of this process. Click here to watch the live stream or learn more here.

Nordic Ambassadors Snow might be slow coming this winter, but our Nordic Ambassador program is ready for action. We have 9 Nordic Ambassadors—several of whom are returning from last winter—on board for this winter season. These USFS volunteers will patrol some of the highest-use areas on the BTNF’s Jackson Ranger District, including the Cache, Trail, and Game Creek Trailheads. “Ambassadors are a friendly, helpful Forest presence and will be out communicating winter regulations and dog leash requirements,” says program manager Margo Feingold.

Skating in Powder!
Many thanks to Teewinot Coach Libby for sending in some images of her Monday-Wednesday group learning “SIP-ing” or how to “skate in powder”.  All that powder we’ve had recently has been an amazing addition to all of the trails at Trail Creek, allowing our Husky to venture out and bring many trails closer to midwinter perfection

So far today, we have had a break from the snow. The forecast does indicate another good shot in the next 24 hours; however, the outlook for over the weekend has diminished slightly with accumulations now being in the “few inches per day” range.

In today’s grooming the Husky was able to cover nearly every trail recently groomed with multiple passes and classic tracks on the Close Field, Armin’s, Animal Farm, and (first of the season) Moose Loop.  This will most likely be the last journey into the woods until Monday as tomorrow our massive three day Johnny Curtis Memorial, IMD Nordic, High Plains Nordic, and Wyoming High School race begins.  The course (map is available on the website) will be closed to the public Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

There was a bit of new experimental grooming in the East Fields today with the primary focus being the development of practice areas for the race.  The final call on whether it is time to open them for the season will be made next week.

Groomer’s choice is to enjoy some great Husky grooming today and then support our teams at the upcoming races.

Cache Creek Singletrack

Groomed by Friends of Pathways
Grooming As Needed

Last Update: 1/11
We groomed the Cache Creek road to Noker Mine and upper Hagen from bridge 5 to 2.  The lower trails are still a little thin on snow, especially under the trees, but are still compact enough to use for now.  We will keep snowshoeing around and packing things in until there is enough snow to take the roller through.

Please help support trail grooming for the Cache Creek Single track trails by donating to the Friends of Pathways.  Visit: friendsofpathways.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Grooming” in the campaign section.

Fresh snow and fresh classic track! We groomed a loop with the snowcat the make sure the depth and firmness was good, and it is! We will begin using the snowcat tomorrow morning although it might be a little rough weather wise for skiing. Once the blizzard is gone we will have primo conditions for the MLK weekend.

Shooting Star

Grooming As Needed
Last Update: 1/11
All trails were able to be groomed today and everything is now open. Classic tracks have been set where snow depths allow, and early season conditions persist. The sled hill was packed down and is best to stay off it until the weekend so the snow can set up firm. Please, note that Friday’s weather appears to be on the windy and wild side as very high winds and possible heavy snow is expected tonight and through tomorrow, so plan accordingly if considering venturing out on the track. Enjoy and Stay Safe!

  • Trail conditions are early season. Please ski with caution as the snow profile is extremely thin.
  • Walking is not allowed.
  • Sled Hill is Closed. We hope to allow full usage this weekend after we have time to prep it from Friday’s storm.
  • Small game/scavenger animals may be present throughout the whole course. Use extra caution when skiing with dogs.

Turpin Meadow Ranch

Grooming As Needed
Last Update: 1/8
Thanks to all who joined us for the annual JH Nordic Alliance Free Ski, Fatbike, and Snowshoe day – it was so much fun and we hope you all come back and join us on a more normal day at the ranch too.

The grooming Monday morning was done with the ginzu, multiple passes in the flats and a single best pass of the hills. We are anticipating quite a bit of snow in the coming days so it may be storm skiing this week, what a nice change! The plan is to allow the hills to fill in with fresh snow for a couple of days, we will still be grooming the flats throughout the week and will buff the hills (hopefully full of new snow) on Friday.

TMR is open to the public daily for skiing, meals, Nordic lessons, and tours! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure! Check out our live webcam for current conditions.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.
