Winter recreation begins on park roads in Grand Teton Friday

Opportunities for over-snow winter recreation will be available beginning Friday, January 12, on Teton Park, Signal Mountain Summit and Moose-Wilson roads in Grand Teton National Park. Enjoy activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and walking during this special time of year.

Teton Park Road will be groomed between Taggart Lake parking and Signal Mountain Lodge, January 12 through mid-March, as conditions allow. The road will be groomed three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, weather permitting. Four lanes will be groomed from Taggart Lake parking to one mile north and then two lanes to Signal Mountain Lodge, which will help expedite spring plow operations to ensure a timely opening of the Teton Park Road for cycling and walking during the month of April.

Grooming is made possible through the financial support from Grand Teton National Park Foundation and a Federal Highway Administration Recreational Trails Program Grant managed by the State of Wyoming.

Parking is available at Taggart Lake Trailhead, Cottonwood Creek Picnic Area and at the gate at the north end of the Teton Park Road near Signal Mountain Lodge.

JHSC January Nordic Newsletter

Welcome to 2024!  Hopefully there will be more snow in the months to come than in the months that were, but the end of 2023 had some great high points.  The Betty Woolsey Classic saw record participation with over 150 athletes registered!  There were high performing athletes, promising young kids, older community members, and even a triple classic ski team!  It was a truly inclusive event for all kinds of cross country skiers of all ages and abilities.

Right after the New Year we will start all of our programs off at full steam on January 3rd!  The Comp Team is heading to Soldier Hollow, the site of the 2002 Olympics, for US National Championships the first week of January while our youth programs get off the ground.

Looking further ahead into January we will host our Johnny Curtis Memorial Junior National Qualifier on January 13-14; to which all community members should come out and participate and spectate!  It will be one of the largest cross country ski races ever held in Jackson Hole.  Qualifying season for the older athletes, youth programs, TCSD winter sports programming, and everything else will all be going on simultaneously!  January is one of our biggest months and we will be providing programming to over 300 people this month!

Trail Creek

Grooming As Needed
Last Update: 1/10
A Beautiful Sight!
It’s truly a beautiful sight seeing a Husky making its maiden voyage through the woods at Trail Creek.  What started out as moderate snow earlier this morning has turned to heavy snow midday today.  The Husky however was making the most of it, leveling and firming nearly every Nordic trail (except for the East Fields) in the system although since grooming began today, another three or more inches has fallen on the trails.  Classic tracks were added in the Close Field, Armin’s, and Animal Farm.

JCM_24_map (800x566).jpg

If all goes according to plan, most trails will get another pass tomorrow then early Friday morning we will shift our focus to grooming for the three day Johnny Curtis Memorial, IMD Nordic, High Plains Nordic, and Wyoming High School races.  Full system grooming will return on Monday, the course will be closed Friday through Sunday.

Groomer’s choice for today is to enjoy some Husky grooming in the woods while marveling at the heavily falling snow.

Shooting Star

Grooming As Needed
Last Update: 1/10
We were able to sneak the snowcat out this morning and level off the drifting on the currently open areas. Holes 15,16, and the ranch area remain closed. Early season conditions still exist, and no classic tracks are set. Anticipate storm skiing and drifty conditions to continue over the next several days. Next update will be Friday 1/12.

  • Trail conditions are early season. Please ski with caution as the snow profile is extremely thin.
  • Walking is not allowed.
  • No classic tracks will be set, and sporadic bare/brushy/exposed areas may be present.
  • Grooming frequencies will be as needed to preserve the track.
  • Sled Hill is Closed. Needs ample snow (2FT).
  • Small game/scavenger animals may be present throughout the whole course. Use extra caution when skiing with dogs.

Turpin Meadow Ranch

Grooming As Needed
Last Update: 1/8
Thanks to all who joined us for the annual JH Nordic Alliance Free Ski, Fatbike, and Snowshoe day – it was so much fun and we hope you all come back and join us on a more normal day at the ranch too.

The grooming Monday morning was done with the ginzu, multiple passes in the flats and a single best pass of the hills. We are anticipating quite a bit of snow in the coming days so it may be storm skiing this week, what a nice change! The plan is to allow the hills to fill in with fresh snow for a couple of days, we will still be grooming the flats throughout the week and will buff the hills (hopefully full of new snow) on Friday.

TMR is open to the public daily for skiing, meals, Nordic lessons, and tours! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure! Check out our live webcam for current conditions.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Teton Reserve Nordic

Last Updated: 1/9
We are not plan on grooming Teton Reserve today. With the forecasted snow and wind, we hope to allow some accumulation of snow on the trails before grooming again. It’s great to allow skiers to help pack the snow while it’s it accumulating, so get out of your skis and enjoy the fresh tracks.

Sherman Park

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Last Updated: 1/10
Reset the classic and skate tracks for Wednesday lights. Quite soft, but not as thin as this morning. The wind and snow were working against us so get it while you can!

Driggs School Loops

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Last Updated: 1/10
I did the first groom of the Driggs track today. Snow is still shallow, with lots of weed/grass sprigs poking out and a few rocks lurking right below the surface. I recommend waiting for more snow before going out on the Driggs track, but if you really want to get some gliding in, it is somewhat usable, just be careful. Skating is especially risky, and there is no classic track set.

Please pick up your trash and dog pop with the supplied Mutt Mitt station.

Alta Nordic Track

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday
Last Updated: 1/9
So close!  The entire track is groomed. We have a good base now but just need a few more inches of snow to buff out the surface. Looks like it is coming. Game on!
