Trip Report: Lucas – Fabian cabins – Grand Teton National Park

Where does one head when the snow is blowing horizontal?  To the historic Lucas Cabins in the Park!  Our original goal was Jenny Lake but the friendly Ambassador recommended against it (thank goodness) due to extremely strong back winds which would be head winds upon our return.  So we headed over to the Lucas Cabins for a beautiful protected lunch and then back to the trailhead – skiing amongst the protected trees.  Nature at its best! -KDJS

Trip Report: Darby Canyon

Darby Canyon trail report from several XC skiers: lightly groomed many days ago. Lots of snow machine traffic… trail is snowmobile packed , rolling from snowmobiles in some parts. beautiful in the sunshine, dog friendly…

USFS groomer just showed up at 1:30p, dropped off grooming equipment, and will groom Friday – so trail will ski nice!

March Nature News

Provided by The Hole Hiking Experience
March began with a big snowstorm…within 24 hours, over 30 inches of snow fell in the Tetons and over a foot of snow blanketed the valley. The heavy snow and strong winds created a high avalanche danger, once again. February was a very wet month and snowpack is currently about 90% of average. We have a similar snow depth to last winter, which was one for the record books. The dryness of December and January feels like ancient history.

Spring officially begins on March 19, 9:06 PM Mountain Time. Our local community transitions to spring with the closing of national park roads and local ice rinks and the end of grooming for cross-country skiing. Make sure to check local grooming schedules since each trail has different end dates.

As days lengthen, the natural world responds with buds on the trees, bears emerging from dens and birds returning to the valley. I have yet to hear the Redwing Blackbird but imagine I will hear that shrill any day now.

We encourage winter trail users to support all of our grooming teams across Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. When possible please consider a donation to the trails you frequent. Please leave a comment such as “grooming” or “Nordic” in the designation or campaign section.

Trail Creek

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/6

What is it?
Somewhere in that moosey brain early this morning, this little bull calf was probably thinking really hard about this strange machine he sees on daily basis, “What is this thing, it can be so scary some days, it also seems to make really easy trails around the woods…Uh oh, here comes that scary guy in the red coat, time to run!”  That was pretty much the entirety of the special encounter this morning, one of the cool things about hanging out at Trail Creek.

Another really cool thing about Trail Creek is that you can discover some fantastic skiing today if you are lucky enough to come out for a ski.  As of report time the sun is beaming down, the temp is approaching the freezing point, and the recent dump has been groomed into some lovely ski trails.

Today’s Husky grooming started with a single skate/classic pass of the woods section of Saturday’s Skinny Skis Wydaho Nordic Race Series Season Finale which is scheduled for 10 AM.  This was followed by extensive additional grooming in the fields and finishing up with East Field Woods, Skyview, and Gutflop which was needed for practice today.

A correction, there is no 1K option on Saturday, just ½, 2, 5, and 10.  You can see a high resolution map here.

Groomer’s choice for today is the gloriously sunny fields.

Wednesday: Reset walking/ single track, skate, and classic tracks after our whirlwind week + of storms! I have good news and bad news first. If you’re a good news first kind of person, scroll to the bottom.

the bad news: things are pretty variable out there at the moment. Some wind drifted and off camber portions of the track, some trenches from the sled skis due to large amounts of soft snow. Did a bunch of shoveling to improve things, but again, variable.

the good news: the track is back! And in some places it’s pretty okay! And it was setting up quickly. Enjoy the snow and the sun!

The Drift Run, Fat Bike, or Ski

March 8-10, 2024
Pinedale, Wyoming

For the last 100 years Wyoming cowboys have “drifted” their cattle each fall out of the mountains where they go to to the desert for the winter. In this epic event racers experience Wyoming– under Wyoming’s terms–Wyoming style. Choose a discipline–Ski, Bike, Run– then set out to complete the course before mother nature finds a way to finish it for you. It is still very much winter up here in March. The temperatures can be sub zero, the wind can be relentless, and snowfall can be measured in feet.

Skinny Skis Season Finale

March 9, 2024
Trail Creek Ranch, Wilson

Courses from ½ k to 10 k means there’s something for everyone. Registration opens at 8am on race day. Suggested entry: $20. All proceeds go to Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club.
