Trail of the Month: 3 Loops for a Quick Nordic Ski
In the winter months, there is usually ample snow for skiing, but the limited daylight can make it more difficult to spend time outdoors. While skiing in places like GTNP, Teton Pass, or Turpin Meadow Ranch offers a breathtaking experience in a tranquil setting, it’s not always feasible to take the time to drive to the trailhead and still get in your ski. That’s why it’s a good idea to identify nearby loops so you can get out for a quick lunchtime Nordic ski. For our January trail of the month, here are three quick and accessible trails for a convenient lunchtime or post-work ski; May Park, Stilson Loop Trail, and Driggs Winter Trails.
All About Alta
NEW PARKING OPTION FOR ALTA SKIERS: There’s a new parking option for when you ski the Alta Track. There are 12 spots available at the Alta Community Park on Targhee Towne Road. Nick Beatty just put in a trail connector so you can ski right from your car to the track. Please relieve Alta parking pressure by giving these spots a try.
MEET AND GREET AT ALTA TODAY JAN. 27: Come visit with TVTAP Board Members Stacy Snyder and Jill Payne and staff member Peggy Boggs at the Alta Track this Saturday from 1-3. There may be some tunes and some cute dogs with us under our colorful TVTAP tent. Come with questions, grab a new Trails & Pathways Jytte beanie, a trail sticker, or just say hey!
ALTA SKIATHLON – FEBRUARY 24th: With the success of this year’s reimagined Teton Ridge Classic and the success of the growing Spud Chase, we are excited for the Alta Skiathlon.
Bridger-Teton Requires Dog Leashes in Wintering Wildlife Areas
The Bridger-Teton National Forest, Jackson Ranger District has dog leash requirements at the Cache Creek and Trail Creek trailheads year-round, and leash requirements that extend onto trails located adjacent to crucial wildlife habitat during the winter months.
From December 1 – May 1, dogs must be leashed in the following trailhead and trail areas, all of which are well signed: Cache Creek, Trail Creek, Game Creek, and Teton Pass trailhead areas; The entire Putt-Putt trail area from Nelson Drive and north of Cache Creek to Salt Lick Draw; The first 1.2 miles of Game Creek; and The entire A&W trail connecting Adams and Wilson Canyons.

Mellowing Calf!
At the beginning of the winter, this healthy looking moose calf more or less went ballistic when she encountered the Husky; however after a couple weeks of dancing around one another, she has habituated dramatically, reacting with mostly a casual glance. While she doesn’t probably realize it, she does seem to enjoy the lovely Nordic trails her special home provides her!
You too can experience some lovely Nordic trails if Trail Creek is your Nordic home and you make it out for a ski today. Today’s Husky grooming covered mostly every trail with today’s focus being to reset the classic tracks throughout the woods. The fields also received multiple passes with fresh classic tracks.
Many of our JHSC skiers are competing in Soldier Hollow today and tomorrow at second Junior National Qualifier. Results can be viewed on this link and you can view a live webcam of what’s going on at this link.
Groomer’s choice for today is to carefully check out Gutflop.

Warmer temperatures will continue through this weekend into next week. Skiers may encounter settling and choppy sections on the track. The sledding hill will continue to be groomed only as needed due to the thin snow profile. We will continue to do our best grooming with the conditions that are thrown at us. With the continuing high temps, anticipate grass and brushy areas to possibly re-emerge. Our grooming schedule and methods may shift in the upcoming week to preserve the track’s lifespan. Next update will be Monday 1/29.
- Trail conditions are variable and thin areas persist.
- Walking is not allowed.
- Sled Hill is Open. Grooming will be as needed.
- Classic Tracks are set where snow allows.
