Crust cruising classic skiing to Lucas Fabian cabins GTNP

Lots of excellent Nordic ski options continue to delight in GTNP…starting at the Taggart parking lot, we skied on the firm crust north, covered in a dusting of fresh snow to soften our glide. Untracked, smooth crust can be found following Teton Park road approximately 30 yards from the road (currently closed to recreational activities, as they plow it in preparation for summer installation).

We only passed a few xc skiers as we headed out, then had the open meadows to ourselves.
We marveled at the plasticity of the cornices in the roofs of the historic Lucas Fabian cabins, then stopped for a snack.

With the new snow, we were happy that we chose classic skies to cut through the new 1” of snow.
Still plenty of Nordic skiing adventures to enjoy!

Trip Report: The Entire Flagstaff Road

On Saturday we wanted to make some miles so we drove up past Togwotee Mountain Lodge and pulled over at the first snowmobile parking pull out on the West side of the highway. Our intention was to achieve a long held goal of mine: to ski the Flagstaff road in its entirety from muskrat flats all the way down to the forest service Hatchet campground, 18 miles, mostly downhill.

Consulting the RideOn WYO Snowmobile App we discovered that much of our route had been groomed the night before. From the parking lot we jumped onto the I trail which connects to the CD (which we followed all the way to our destination). While it was a Saturday we figured that there wouldn’t be too much snowmobile traffic as it was hill climb weekend in town. We only saw a few groups and they were all very friendly, many of them gave us thumbs up and cheered us on for having so much fun. We love the land of multi-use!

This one way trip is only possible with a shuttle, parking one vehicle at the Hatchet campground and then continuing on up the pass in another vehicle. Considering the amount of snow still on Togwotee this outing will be an option for a while longer though the snowmobile trail grooming will taper off long before the snow melts. If this excursion is also on your bucket list be sure to bring bear spray!

We encourage winter trail users to support all of our grooming teams across Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. When possible please consider a donation to the trails you frequent. Please leave a comment such as “grooming” or “Nordic” in the designation or campaign section.

Trail Creek

Grooming Daily
Last Update 3/25

International Spring Series!
Click on this link to see a high resolution version of this weekend’s International Ski Federation race course map at Trail Creek.  The three days of racing will include classic skiing, skate skiing, and a skate sprint course.  As of last report volunteers were still needed, and if you want to give it a shot, registration is open for about another day at this link.

If Nordic skiing is on your agenda for today, Trail Creek would be a great data point on your daily calendar.  You’ll discover that the inch of snow that fell yesterday was a lovely addition to the Husky’s late day journey on nearly every trail in our system.  The single pass on most trails was a skate/classic pass with double passes on most of the Close Field and Homeward and Outward Bound.

Look for extra grooming on the race courses for the rest of the week; next grooming will probably be Tuesday night with daily grooming returning by at least Thursday to the final grooming either Sunday night or Monday morning.  If possible every other day grooming of non-race trails will continue to the end, during the races.

Groomer’s choice for today is Cle’s Climb.
