JH Nordic Alliance, Turpin Meadow Ranch, and Rendezvous Events teamed up for a day of trail fun on the BTNF with visiting media guests.

Shout out to the Turpin Meadow Ranch team for delivering more great skiing and biking even when some of us were wondering (again) “is there enough snow?” Well done on the grooming! The team of 14 writers and another dozen staff and sponsors worked up an appetite classic skiing on some Salomon light touring skis (many first-time skiers) before Bijou and the Camp Chef team treated us to a make-your-own pizza bar on the patio. The pizzas were delicious and fortified those who could stay for the afternoon to go for their first fat bike rides, enjoy the summer homes loop on skate skis, or sit by the lodge with a cold can of fizzy from the (bear proof!) RovR coolers. The Tetons peaked out and we spoke with a few folks about where they might ski near their respective homes as they bid farewell. Huge thanks to Kristan Burba and her team at Rendezvous Events for bringing all of this together to help highlight the Nordic community and our amazing winter trails.

New Free Nordic Trail in Teton Village: Gray Meadow

We are excited to announce the revival of a favorite Nordic ski trail in Teton Village. Thanks to the partnership of the Snake River Ranch and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and with the community connection of the Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance, there is now a groomed 2.1 mile trail you can ski for free.

The Gray Meadow trail, in the delightful meadow formerly home to the Cowboy Nordic Trail, is an easy gentle trail with big Teton views. The track is groomed for skate and classic skiers are welcome; no bikes or dogs on the ski trail. In this shared use meadow, please take care to ski on the Nordic trail and not venture west onto the dog sled or sleigh ride trails. Check out the trail map and full description below.

Trip Report: Before the sunshine at LSR Preserve

Today was quiet and crunchy on our approximately 5 mile adventure to Laurence Rockefeller (LSR) Preserve from Granite Canyon trailhead! We were advised that the road was too uneven and treacherous for Nordic skiing so we chose the wiser out and back via the meadow, just east of the Granite Canyon trailhead. -KD.

Classic Masters!
The JHSC Master Nordic Skiing Class is back today, today’s technique being classic skiing.  After days of clouds they are enjoying some sun and a classic skiing friendly temp of 19º as they check out the rolling terrain of Trail Creek.

Thanks to Coach Libby for sending in some images yesterday of the Teewinots enjoying some sunshine as well, and perhaps showing older skiers how to have a great time on snow!

The Husky was hard at work earlier today, setting classic tracks and skate lanes throughout our trail network.  The recent mini-drought along with the slight bit of thawing we have experienced has firmed the conditions dramatically.  The Husky was set for very aggressive tilling today; while you will find some voids in our hard working snow, all in all skiing conditions are pretty good.  Most woods trails received a single skate/classic pass while the fields and Moose Loop received multiple passes with fresh classic tracks and skate lanes.

Snow returns to the forecast tonight with a snowy, if slightly warmer than ideal week ahead.  Some Nordic areas aren’t as fortunate as us this El Niño winter.  In northern Wisconsin where the American Birkie is scheduled to be held in a couple of weeks, they are facing sunshine and highs in the 40’s for the foreseeable future.  Makes our slightly warm snow forecast look fantastic.  The current forecast is calling for around 16 inches over the next 6 days.

Groomer’s choice for today is to enjoy some sun cruising around the fields.

Shooting Star

Last Update: 1/29
Warmer temperature will continue throughout this week with the weekend forecast becoming cooler and potential snow showers starting Friday.  The sled hill will continue to be groomed only as needed due to the thin snow profile.  We will continue to assess and adjust grooming as conditions develop during the week.  With the current weather outlook, please anticipate areas that will continue to settle, with potential for grass and brushy areas to emerge. Skiers may encounter choppy sections on the track also. Our grooming schedule and methods may shift to preserve the track’s lifespan during the week. Next update will be Friday, February 2nd.

  • Trail conditions are variable and thin areas persist.
  • Walking is not allowed.
  • Sled Hill is Open. Grooming will be as needed.
  • Classic Tracks are set where snow allows.

Sherman Park

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Last Updated: 1/31
Persevered and sort of overcame the comically challenging grooming conditions. The classic track is in better shape than it was (read: still not great, but definitely better). Skate track buffed out and real nice in some places. The current conditions at Sherman Park are highly variable: sun pocked, freshly groomed, and thin (dirt in some places!), are all words you could use to describe it. Enjoy what’s there. And hope for more snow. (if you’re headed out for Wednesday night lights, have fun! And expect conditions to be starting to get icy)

Driggs School Loops

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Last Updated: 2/1
Reset skate and classic Wednesday night. If you get out early on Thursday you will have fast, smooth skating. The classic track did not turn out great – the snow is too hard – but it is mostly usable. Snow is very thin going up/down the hills to the upper loop. Watch for rocks. Who would think we would be crust cruising in January? Pray for snow!

Please pick up your trash and dog pop with the supplied Mutt Mitt station.

Alta Nordic Track

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday
Last Updated: 1/31
Reset skate lane so it should freeze tonight and be in good condition in the morning. I was unable to reset the classic tracks. I tried but was making them worse. Classic tracks are in generally poor condition- melted out and glazed. Hopefully we will get some more snow and we can refresh them.

  • Morel Mushroom Foraging in the Tetons
Let’s make lemonade out of lemons.. the lemonade being morel mushrooms and the lemons being the lingering cold temperatures (snow, sleet, and hail). What comes with so much needed precipitation are morels! Morel mushrooms are fungi that grow in the filtered light of forests. These oddly shaped mushrooms graze the valley floor and make for a fun activity for the whole family. Walking through the woods or floating the Snake River with a keen eye… Read More
