A Fast Bunch of Skiers!

Congratulations to the Jackson Hole Ski Club Nordic Team on their many accomplishments and lots of fast skiing. And thank you to the groomer at Trail Creek for sharing the photo and following words: The image above is the 2023-2024 JHSC Competition Team who are pretty much all busily racing today all across the country.  Near Lake Placid, NY at the Mt Van Hoevenberg Nordic area where the Junior Nationals are in progress you can follow the racing live on this webcam and get the results from the event website.  While many of our racers are in New York, most of the rest of them are in Utah today, skiing at the Western Club Championships, a busy weekend for the comp team!

Recap of the TVTAP Ladies Grooming Clinic

Thanks to CQ for organizing a half day introductory grooming clinic for ladies over at the Alta track on Saturday, March 16. CQ said of the day, “I feel fortunate to have the ability to create an affinity space for people who thought grooming was maybe not something that they could do… participants really seemed to enjoy the experience and pick up the skills and build their confidence. Hopefully some, if not all of the ladies will want to volunteer with TVTAP next season. And thanks to Nick and Kevin of TVTAP and Elee of Turpin Meadow Ranch, who shared their knowledge and added value to the day!”

Highlights from JH Nordic and Snake River Fund Meet & Greet

There were many highlights from Saturday morning’s JH Nordic Alliance/Snake River Fund meet and greet at Emily’s Pond. There was much to enjoy: the sun, spring snow, the Snake river, and even a wildlife sighting of some playful river otters!

End of the Season at Turpin Meadow Ranch

The last day of operations at Turpin Meadow Ranch is TODAY! So head up to enjoy the winter trails, great scenery, delicious food, and wonderful staff one last time for this winter season. While TMR is shutting down operations it is situated on the Bridger-Teton National Forest which means you can still recreate up there after today, though trails will no longer be groomed or signed. Please be mindful that after today there will be no availability of facilities, the lodge and all buildings will be closed. Also, bring your bear spray if you plan to do any spring skiing in the Togowotee/Turpin area.

One last local tip from Turpin’s resident fun facilitator: “Ideally you can bring your quiver of equipment and waxes and enjoy a multi sport day today. If I was spending the last day on the winter trails at Turpin I’d be biking around 9am for an hour or two. I’d then switch to my Nordic skis and explore all of the trails. After that I’d head into the lodge for to refuel and exchange stories with my friends. Bottom line, your best bet is to ski or bike in the early part of the day and enjoy an afternoon aprés on the patio looking at the Tetons.”

The sun is setting on the season at Turpin Meadow Ranch today

Grand Teton Park Road Information

Friday, March 15 was the last day of grooming in GTNP. The trail should stay in excellent shape for a few days at least. The crust is starting to set up as well, so take advantage of the lovely weekend to get in some of the last groomed experience from Taggart to Signal OR Signal to Taggart!

Starting Monday no road skiing will be allowed as the park begins snow removal. If you go skiing or snowshoeing close to the side of the road exercise caution to avoid snow and debris being thrown great distances from snow removal equipment. Read the article on Buckrail for more information on the last weekend for snow activities on Teton Park Road.

We encourage winter trail users to support all of our grooming teams across Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. When possible please consider a donation to the trails you frequent. Please leave a comment such as “grooming” or “Nordic” in the designation or campaign section.

Trail Creek

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/16

While the comp teams are racing around the country, closer to home you too can get your Nordic skis on today for a lovely ski.  Today’s Trail Creek grooming happened late in the day yesterday with the Husky making a pass of most every trail in the network.  Most trails received a fresh classic track and the close field received multiple passes.

If you’re heading out shortly, try some crust cruising in the fields, as the sun starts to warm things (forecast high of 46º today) hit the field trails, and later on the woods should ski well.  Next grooming will be tonight.

Groomer’s choice for today is to find just the right trail for the time of your ski.

Spring’s just around the corner and Golf Maintenance is scheduled to conduct our annual practice of applying black sand on the greens that naturally aids in melting the snow. Based on the upcoming forecast, we anticipate temporarily switching to evening trail grooming which allows us to perform maintenance on the greens during the mornings. Evening grooming begins at 5:30 pm and all skiers need to be off the trails by this time. Reminder, that conditions may be icier during the morning hours throughout the final portion of the season. Below is an approximate outline of the upcoming Maintenance schedule during March 13-18 (Weather & Equipment pending):

  1. Wednesday (3/13): Evening Grooming begins at 5:30 pm, skiers need to be off the trails.
  2. Thursday & Friday: The snow on the greens will be packed down via our snowcat during the morning and early afternoon hours. Evening Grooming will begin at 5:30 pm daily, skiers need to be off the trails.
  3. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday: Black sand will be applied to the greens during the morning hours. Evening Grooming will begin at 5:30 pm daily, skiers need to be off the trails.
  4. Tuesday (3/19): Grooming switches back to mornings, pending completion of maintenance practices.

Note, skiers may encounter some rough sections caused by equipment hauling materials to the Golf Maintenance facility, but skiing conditions should remain enjoyable throughout this process. This is a time sensitive operation and needed to be performed during this timeframe, as above average temperature are forecasted next week. Thanks.

Saturday’s groom happened Friday evening with a ginzu pass over the skate lane. Variable spring like conditions exist and they are ever changing throughout the day. Over all the course is firm and fast, especially in the morning. When things heat up in the afternoon sunny parts of the trail will be soft/slushy.

Sunday’s groom will happen Saturday afternoon. Please also be aware that the road crossings on the summer homes and riverside loops are down to pavement so you will need to remove skis to get across.

TMR is open to the public daily for skiing, meals, Nordic lessons, and tours! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure! Check out our live webcam for current conditions.

Cleaned up the skate lane on both yeti and campground. Reset the classic track on campground. The classic track on yeti was in pretty good shape and I could t have improved it, so I left it alone. It’s not great in the sunny spots and it is great in the shady spots. Enjoy! Looks like it was skiing fast and fun! Don’t forget your sunscreen!

Singletrack: 3/15
Groomed the powerline, grumpy connector, and the hillbenders. We are in “ride early, ride cold” season for sure. The shift in daylight has also brought out a ton of people with dogs (first time we have seen any this season) but remember the forest service rules do not allow dogs in Mike Harris during the winter months. Thanks!

Please note the USFS dog closure policy Dec 1st – April 15th at this venue.

Teton Reserve Nordic

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
Last Updated: 3/16
Groomed with the rabbit in really challenging conditions. The golden hour at this time of the year is exactly that, about an hour. Groomed all the southern loops for skate and classic. Left the north loop as is due to the challenges. Groomer tip: try to ski between 30 and 35°  for your best experience. Any colder and it will be frozen due to the moisture content from the warm daytime temp.

ATTENTION: Do not CRUST CRUISE on golf course property and respect the privacy of homeowners. Stay away from homes, private property and ski on established trails only. Thank you.

good news: classic track is in. It’s a bit variable (shallow) in some places and soft at the moment, but hopefully it sets up well.
better news: used the ginzu to reset the skate track and it’s in good condition!
The snow is falling and covering things quickly, but the sun is on its way. Get it while you can!
