Meet this week’s JHSC Champion, Lena Poduska!

Lena traveled with four JHSC teammates, and coaches Jon Filardo and Luna Wasson, to Houghton, MI, for the 2023 US Cross Country Ski Championships, hosted by Michigan Tech University from January 2-7. The event featured nearly 500 athletes from a dozen countries, with junior and senior racers competing for glory.

Lena, a sophomore on the JHSC Nordic Prep Team, had an outstanding series, finishing 7th in a pool of nearly 200 women in the Classic Mass Start. She reached the quarterfinals in both the Classic and Freestyle sprints, falling just short of the semifinal heats.

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” -John Steinbeck

Wonderful to get Teton views! We were missed by the last weather system which does happen in the Rocky Mountains and the influence of the continental divide. At times, storms go south.  Since we get most of our annual moisture during the winter months, the Tetons are often behind the clouds. Not this past weekend and boy, are they beautiful!

Our Annual Nordic event was a huge success and such fun to visit Turpin Meadows (https://www.turpinmeadowranch.com/),  promote Nordic activities, meet Alliance members and chat with the community. Quite a local event!

The drive to Turpin Meadows is beautiful on a sunny day.  We saw bison by Triangle X and both moose and elk on the drive into Buffalo Valley. All these animals have adapted to the winter world, so the question becomes how do they get to their food? They are plant eaters, so they have to move the snow to get to the vegetation.  Bison use their head and muscular shoulders to push the snow away to reach grass. Elk use their cloven hoofs to paw at the snow to get to plants. Moose will browse on bushes above the snow but also have a great sense of smell and can find bushes covered by snow to nibble on.  Most plants are dormant in the winter so these animals are not getting much nutrition. They lose weight in the winter which is why we must be extra careful to not disturb them. #recreateresponsibly

Lots of possible adventures in our winter wonderland. I always think safety first so choose locations based on weather and conditions. It is fun to explore trails in the different mountain ranges. If a sunny day, go explore and experience a new part of the valley. Join us to get off the beaten path or set the intention to try a new place. The Gros Ventre Mountains on the eastern side of Jackson Hole offer wonderful views. Drive up Teton Pass to the Phillips trailhead and ski out the road or snowshoe through the trees. Super fun to look down on the valley. Lots of winter to come. Have fun and be safe.

Trail Creek

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 1/11

More and More and More Snow!
Since yesterday’s grooming another half foot plus has fallen at Trail Creek, keeping things very fresh, if a little on the soft side.  The percentage of normal for the year at our local snow reporting station Phillips Bench has risen to 123% as of today.  The map below is a USDA map of snow percentages for much of the west; you can view it in more detail at this link.  Some of the lucky or unlucky, depending on your perspective, basins in California are around 250-300 percent of normal for the year, what a series of storms they’ve been having.

basin map.jpg

Here at Trail Creek we get a reprieve from the snow for a few days with some really warm temps coming our way then more snow over the weekend.  As of report time it is still snowing moderately with a bit of wind moving a bit of snow, but not too bad so far.

Today’s grooming covered nearly every trail with a single Husky pass with fresh classic tracks.  Trails in the fields, Woolsey Woods, Homeward and Outward Bound, and Moose Loop received multiple passes.  Conditions are a bit soft, but both classic skiers and skaters have been making good progress today with lots of smiles being seen.

Today is yet another busy practice day with the full slate of teams this afternoon.  Looking ahead most high school age skiers will be off to Lander on Friday for another Wyoming High School competition.

Finally to close, another great shot from Coach Kirsys from the recent Teton Ridge Classic.

Groomer’s choice for today is Moose Loop.

I reworked the flats this morning as that is where most of our guests ski. The hilly trails are in great shape from yesterday’s groom and did not get a lot of pressure so they did not get re groomed this morning. All in all today is going to be a wonderful day to ski, snowshoe, and fat bike at Turpin; the sun will be shining and the entirety of the JH Nordic Alliance will be here celebrating winter trails and the Nordic community.

Turpin Meadow Ranch is open to all for skiing, lodging, dining, Nordic lessons, and tours! Ours is a short season so be sure to plan a visit this winter between now and March 13, 2022. Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure and/or meal
