Though the sunshine was filtered through the veil of clouds that hung low on the Tetons today, the groomed trail was in perfect shape. -Kathy G.

February Nature News

Field Facts

  • Both Bald and Golden Eagles can be found in Jackson Hole during the winter months.
  • Bald Eagles develop the white head and tail feathers when they are about 5 years old.
  • Never let animals lick your vehicle. It can make them sick and saliva spreads disease.

Backcountry Tips

  • Both drier lint and cotton balls with vaseline will you help start a fire in the backcountry. Consider adding these to your backcountry pack to use with a couple fire sticks.  Aluminum foil works well as a base.
  • A black bear was recently caught on video at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village. Seems the mild winter has at least one bruin active. Reminder to carry bear spray.

Trail Suggestions
As the snow deepens, it is fun to explore Shadow Mountain in the Gros Ventre Range. You can reach the winter parking area by following the Gros Ventre Road past Kelly. You can always ski up the road, explore the rolling terrain or snowshoe through the meadows as snow accumulates. You can’t beat the views on a sunny day and it is always a great area to look for wildlife. Remember to give them space and make sure to tell a friend where you are going. Enjoy!

More Than Just Skiing!

Well, skiing is the number one focus, but in getting there, JHSC Nordic programs cover a lot of ground; dry land training, weight training, nutrition, good grades in school, and every once in a while, a bit of a diversion.  Thanks to Coach George for sending in the image of some of the Juniors having a good time, playing a game of hockey.

Many of our JHSC skiers are currently competing at the third and final IMD Qualifier in McCall, ID today and tomorrow.  So far in today’s sprint races our very own Aurora Stiles and Nate Streubel have finished first in their division.  There are lots of other notable finishes; the results are available on the event website or from Zone 4 Timing.  This weekend’s racing will determine who gets to go to Nationals in Lake Placid, NY in March.

Closer to home, while we’re still battling crunchy snow, the Husky’s results were mostly favorable today.  The single journey through the woods covered pretty much every trail with a slight favor towards smoothing out the skate lanes over resetting classic tracks.  Moose Poop, Homeward Bound, and Outward Bound received multiple passes with fresh classic tracks.  The fields were crunchier to begin with, due to recent sunshine, but after multiple passes are skiing pretty well and quite fast.

If you haven’t heard, one of our valley moose has made national news.  Here is a link to the video of the moose chasing skiers at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.  Don’t forget we’re having our own Moose Chase one week from today, get those registrations in!  And finally, Cranky the moose is still hanging out with no more reports of him chasing anyone recently.

Groomer’s choice for today is the close woods, Moose Poop, Outward Bound, and Homeward Bound.

Grooming will be ongoing through 11am this morning. Yesterday’s very wet snow left a stubborn ice layer on the trails, which requires aggressive blade work and slower operating speed. The finish product will be on the more crumbly-side as this icy profile isn’t very pliable. Conditions should improve over the next several days as colder more stable temperatures return.

Groomed with the rabbit to set a classic track and skate lane on all loops. Skate track is a little rough in spots due to an incredibly firm/icey snowpack. Enjoy the glide.

Teton Reserve parking lot works best when you park in the configuration in this image. Please refer to the photo for visual representation. Feel free to be a community member and coach each other on best practices. Park in the red highlights. NO PARKING IN THE GREEN HIGHLIGHTS.

Groomed Sherman Park, reset the skate lane and classic track. Of course the classic turned out nice looking in this sloppy mess of a snow pack. Skate lane is just OK. Expect soft conditions until temperatures drop starting Thursday. Shove in a couple of the bear patches to try to maintain the base. Enjoy what you can while you can.

Let’s make lemonade out of lemons.. the lemonade being morel mushrooms and the lemons being the lingering cold temperatures (snow, sleet, and hail). What comes with so much needed precipitation are morels! Morel mushrooms are fungi that grow in the filtered light of forests. These oddly shaped mushrooms graze the valley floor and make for a fun activity for the whole family. Walking through the woods or floating the Snake River with a keen eye… Read More
