JHSC January Nordic Newsletter
Welcome to 2024! Hopefully there will be more snow in the months to come than in the months that were, but the end of 2023 had some great high points. The Betty Woolsey Classic saw record participation with over 150 athletes registered! There were high performing athletes, promising young kids, older community members, and even a triple classic ski team! It was a truly inclusive event for all kinds of cross country skiers of all ages and abilities.
Right after the New Year we will start all of our programs off at full steam on January 3rd! The Comp Team is heading to Soldier Hollow, the site of the 2002 Olympics, for US National Championships the first week of January while our youth programs get off the ground.
Looking further ahead into January we will host our Johnny Curtis Memorial Junior National Qualifier on January 13-14; to which all community members should come out and participate and spectate! It will be one of the largest cross country ski races ever held in Jackson Hole. Qualifying season for the older athletes, youth programs, TCSD winter sports programming, and everything else will all be going on simultaneously! January is one of our biggest months and we will be providing programming to over 300 people this month!

Trail Creek
Grooming As Needed
Last Update: 1/9
Glorious Snow!
It’s coming fast and furious today at Trail Creek, even heavier than when the above photo was snapped earlier this morning. A summation of snow fall totals for the next 6 days added up to 31 inches on this morning’s hourly forecast.
Today’s grooming began with multiple roller passes throughout the woods as there was a bit too much snow for the Ginzu to handle well. A little new grooming happened today in the Black Hole area. The Close Field received a Husky pass complete with a fresh classic track. If the forecast holds true, look for the Husky’s first journey into the woods tomorrow.
Skiing is a bit soft today, but it is also sublime and delightful to cruise through the silent snowy woods as the storm continues to dump copious amounts of wondrous snow on our beloved trails; you should really check it out if you have a chance.
Don’t forget we have a massive race coming up Friday, Saturday, and Sunday which will affect grooming, parking, and what is open to the public for skiing. Check it out on the event website. Community recreational Nordic Skiers are encouraged too watch the event, but Trail Creek Nordic will be too busy for any recreational skiing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Groomer’s choice for today is Black Hole.

Here it comes! If things go as planned today with snowfall totals. We might be able to get the snowcat out tomorrow morning.
We are still grooming the track packing down as much new snow as possible. If you’re going to ski today, come out soon as the wind is supposedl to get rough this afternoon.
Shooting Star
Grooming As Needed
Last Update: 1/8
It appears we’ll finally be receiving some much-needed snow throughout this whole week! As mentioned in our last update, anticipate that conditions could be on the awkward side as our snow profile will likely go through a transitional phase, where snowfall amounts and drifting could be significant enough to make snowmobile grooming very difficult, yet not enough snow to utilize the Pistenbully snowcat. Also, we will continue to focus on grooming the same early-season course (see attached map) for the time being. Once enough snow has accumulated and the storms have settled, we’ll then need several days to prep the currently closed areas prior to deciding if they are safe to open. Fingers crossed for lots of snow! Again, expect storm skiing Tuesday-Friday, so prepare accordingly and use caution. Next update will be Friday 1/12 or earlier if conditions severely change. Enjoy!
- Trail conditions are early season. Please ski with caution as the snow profile is extremely thin.
- Walking is not allowed.
- No classic tracks will be set, and sporadic bare/brushy/exposed areas may be present.
- Grooming frequencies will be as needed to preserve the track.
- Sled Hill is Closed. Needs ample snow (2FT).
- Small game/scavenger animals may be present throughout the whole course. Use extra caution when skiing with dogs.

Thanks to all who joined us for the annual JH Nordic Alliance Free Ski, Fatbike, and Snowshoe day – it was so much fun and we hope you all come back and join us on a more normal day at the ranch too.
The grooming Monday morning was done with the ginzu, multiple passes in the flats and a single best pass of the hills. We are anticipating quite a bit of snow in the coming days so it may be storm skiing this week, what a nice change! The plan is to allow the hills to fill in with fresh snow for a couple of days, we will still be grooming the flats throughout the week and will buff the hills (hopefully full of new snow) on Friday.
TMR is open to the public daily for skiing, meals, Nordic lessons, and tours! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure! Check out our live webcam for current conditions.

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday

I went out and tried to take the roller on the little bit of fresh snow we received. There is still not enough snow to safely groom and equipment was just bouncing off of rocks. I went around the very short entry loop from the parking lot twice before realizing it was not going to help. Please don’t be fooled when you see the groomed track near the lot. It doesn’t go far and has lots of sticks, rocks, and weeds protruding. fingers crossed for more snow!
Please pick up your trash and dog pop with the supplied Mutt Mitt station.
