February Nature News
Provided by The Hole Hiking Experience
It has been a low snow year here in Jackson Hole, although stunningly beautiful as always. The month began at 76% of average snowfall. Annual snowfall measured at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is typically 400 inches at 9,400 feet. Reaching average snowfall is very important because most of our annual moisture comes during the winter months. Historically, February is a snowy month and more snow is predicted for the next few days. Temperatures have been warmer than usual which does make life easier for wildlife.
How to Save the Whitebark Pine
Whitebark Pine grows in the northern Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest and is a keystone species in the subalpine zone of the west. It has a nutritious seed that provides food for birds, small mammals, and black and grizzly bears. The survival of the trees reflects the health of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The species is now listed as endangered. Please click through to see more resources discussing the natural history and current pressures affecting this magnificent tree.
Trail Suggestions
As the snow deepens, it is fun to explore Shadow Mountain in the Gros Ventre Range. You can reach the winter parking area by following the Gros Ventre Road past Kelly. You can always ski up the road, explore the rolling terrain or snowshoe through the meadows as snow accumulates. You can’t beat the views on a sunny day and it is always a great area to look for wildlife. Remember to give them space and make sure to tell a friend where you are going. Enjoy!
Trip Report: Teton Canyon
It was cloudy skies when I started up the nicely groomed classic track at Teton Canyon this afternoon. It was a wet snow pack that made it a bit harder to get a grip with fish scales at the beginning. But as you go up it was perfect and very fast coming out. Though I didn’t skate, everyone I saw was flying along. Excellent day and sighting of a marshmallow on a stick!
Thank you for the reports Kathy G.!

Crunchy Morning!
The recent heavy wet snow and warm daytime temps followed by subfreezing overnight temps, conspired to transform our trails into a chopped and hard surface first thing this morning. However, the Husky has been hard at work, turning the tough conditions into a much better situation. While a few of the field trails did end up bit pockmarked, all in all as of report time, conditions range from a good ok to pretty good.
Almost every wood trail received at least a single skate/classic pass with Woolsey Woods and the fields receiving multiple passes. Even where the surface is a little rough, skaters should be able to make good time and classic skiers likewise should be able to move easily as well.
The weather does look favorable for Nordic skiing for the near future with a return to cooler temps with occasional light snow, just what we need to make our trails pristine.
The Master’s Class was gathering at report time, the Prep/Comp and many Juniors are travelling to McCall, Idaho today for the third Junior National Qualifier; you can follow along on the event website. There will be a small group of Teewinots this afternoon and only a reduced squad of Juniors Friday afternoon.
Groomer’s choice for today is Woolsey Woods.

The grooming is great with all this snow!! Now is the perfect time to drop off your skis with is for a mid-season wax. This warm fresh snow is notorious for sticking to your skis but with a fresh hot wax you’ll be gliding fast and not sticking!

Grooming will be ongoing through 11am this morning. Yesterday’s very wet snow left a stubborn ice layer on the trails, which requires aggressive blade work and slower operating speed. The finish product will be on the more crumbly-side as this icy profile isn’t very pliable. Conditions should improve over the next several days as colder more stable temperatures return.

Groomed Sherman Park, reset the skate lane and classic track. Of course the classic turned out nice looking in this sloppy mess of a snow pack. Skate lane is just OK. Expect soft conditions until temperatures drop starting Thursday. Shove in a couple of the bear patches to try to maintain the base. Enjoy what you can while you can.
