Bridger-Teton Requires Dog Leashes in Wintering Wildlife Areas

The Bridger-Teton National Forest, Jackson Ranger District has dog leash requirements at the Cache Creek and Trail Creek trailheads year-round, and leash requirements that extend onto trails located adjacent to crucial wildlife habitat during the winter months.

From December 1 – May 1, dogs must be leashed in the following trailhead and trail areas, all of which are well signed

Gathering of the Masters!
As the morning’s grooming session was wrapping up, the Nordic Master Ski Class was gathering at Trail Creek for the first time this year after beginning the season at the Teton Pines. Many more than pictured above streamed onto the snow for a delightful session skating (today’s venue) around our lovely trails.  Look for them on Thursdays for today and the following four weeks.

At the other end of the spectrum we have the never ending energy of our younger skiers.  Many thanks to Coach Kaya for sending in a picture of the Devos skiing during yesterday’s afternoon session.  The image above of the Colter Winter Sports skiers getting ready to ski mid-day yesterday shows another aspect of what goes into bringing Nordic to the community, that community ranging from the smallest skiers to people who may have been skiing for decades.

Since yesterday’s grooming we’ve received a heavy dusting of snow with warm temps continuing; hovering right around freezing as of report time.  The Husky was the grooming tool of the day and in its mission, it covered nearly every trail.  With the Nordic Masters using the skating technique today (Thursday), priority in the woods was given to the skate lanes with the lightly dusted but mostly pristine classic tracks being left untouched where possible.  In the fields multiple passes occurred with freshly set classic tracks.

The bit of fresh snow, warm temps, and fresh grooming all come together to make for a grand day to Nordic ski!

Many of our JHSC skiers are off to the second Junior National Qualifier in Soldier Hollow today (Thursday), tomorrow (Friday), and Saturday which should result in lighter afternoon skiing pressure today and tomorrow.

Groomer’s choice for today is Armin’s.

Shooting Star

Last Update: 1/23
Above average temperatures will continue this week with light rain/snow showers. Due to the warm weather, skiers may encounter settled areas and variable conditions. The sled hill will only be groomed when needed, as the thinning profile won’t be able to handle frequent grooming. Outlook is calling for warm weather to continue with temperatures this weekend potentially climbing into the mid-40’s (15-20* F above average!!). We’ll continue to do our best with what mother nature throws at us, but if the snow gets too melty, then anticipate bare or brushy areas could begin to reemerge and grooming frequencies & tactics may shift to preserve the lifespan of the trails.

  • Trail conditions are variable and thin areas persist.
  • Walking is not allowed.
  • Sled Hill is Open. Grooming will be as needed.
  • Classic Tracks are set where snow allows.

Tuesday morning: Groomed all skate lanes on Yeti and Campground loops. Left the classic track alone due to conditions. It’s holding up okay. I was able to set a new classic track on Yeti Cutoff. Have fun!

Singletrack: 1/24 With the help of a couple inches of fresh snowfall, we rolled out the ruts and footprints on lady slippers, Nemo and BPA. Did a bit of shovel work on the west end of the network to help improve some off camber sections. Firm base, but please try to ride when the temps are low. Mind your tire pressure.

Please note the USFS dog closure policy Dec 1st – April 15th at this venue.

The skate lane was groomed Wednesday night. It should ski very nice Thursday morning. Get in some laps before the next snow arrives on Thursday.

Please pick up your trash and dog pop with the supplied Mutt Mitt station.
