Skiers may be leaving ‘forever chemicals’ in the local environment
Article by KHOL 89.1FM
“There are all different kinds of flavors of ski wax, for just about every temperature or snow condition that you can imagine,” Skinny Skis co-owner Scott O’Brien said, sitting in the back room of his shop, which specializes in Nordic skiing, outdoor gear and apparel.
O’Brien has been cross-country skiing almost his entire life. He said he saw waxes introduced in the ‘90s that had per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, in the 1990s.
“It was a real game changer because of their water repellency,” O’Brien said. “It was a game changer when it came to performance.”
But the chemicals may put the community’s health at risk.

Ski Ballet
The Teewinots were up to their usual shenanigans yesterday, performing ski ballet below the Aspen Bump. The second and third grade Teewinots are young enough to know how to have a really good time, but old enough to be some pretty competent skiers. A Teewinot sighting is always a joy, thanks to Coach Libby for the image!
Images at Trail Creek today are somewhat of a complicated picture. While the warm overnight temps and half inch of fresh snow has resulted in some quite nice skiing conditions, if your goal is to take pictures, the fog, snow, and flat light might make that difficult. However for most Nordic skiers a good ski is priority number one and that shouldn’t be a problem today.
Yesterday’s classic tracks are still pristine with a dusting of snow in them; the grooming focus today was mostly on skate lanes. The Husky covered pretty much every trail in the system with pretty good results. You will find a few classic track breaks in the narrower section where the Husky could not pass without resetting the classic track. Animal Farm and Olympic did receive multiple passes and fresh classic tracks today. Experienced skiers will also note that the Nordic X course is starting to happen, although a bit more snow is needed for the extreme version.
Groomer’s choice for today is Olympic.

I rolled the cache creek road 4 wide, its not corduroy but it should be wide enough to skate ski. I also smoothed out some of the singletrack with the harrow drag.

Shooting Star
Grooming Daily
Last Update: 1/23
Above average temperatures will continue this week with light rain/snow showers. Due to the warm weather, skiers may encounter settled areas and variable conditions. The sled hill will only be groomed when needed, as the thinning profile won’t be able to handle frequent grooming. Outlook is calling for warm weather to continue with temperatures this weekend potentially climbing into the mid-40’s (15-20* F above average!!). We’ll continue to do our best with what mother nature throws at us, but if the snow gets too melty, then anticipate bare or brushy areas could begin to reemerge and grooming frequencies & tactics may shift to preserve the lifespan of the trails.
- Trail conditions are variable and thin areas persist.
- Walking is not allowed.
- Sled Hill is Open. Grooming will be as needed.
- Classic Tracks are set where snow allows.

Monday: Plan to reset skate track this morning. Will see if I am able to improve classic or leave alone. Spring like conditions once again should make for good skiing. Was able to reset classic track as well. Turned out great, for the most part.
Snow stake is currently showing 36″.
Trail Etiquette: Please keep your dogs leashed in the parking lot and be sure to clean up after them!

Teton Reserve Nordic
Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
Last Updated: 1/22
Groomed while temperatures were more favorable this evening. Classic track was in good condition so didn’t reset it. Southern skate tracks have all been reset and looks like they should ski well for a few hours tomorrow morning before it warms up again. Northern skate loops didn’t turn out quite as well as the temps dropped. Get it while it’s good!
Teton Reserve parking lot works best when you park in the configuration in this image. Please refer to the photo for visual representation. Feel free to be a community member and coach each other on best practices. Park in the red highlights. NO PAKING IN THE GREEN HIGHLIGHTS.

Groomed late Sunday night to take as many bumps out of the slush as possible with the hope that it will freeze up over night. The forecast doesn’t look great but if it gets cold enough the track will be solid Monday AM. Smoothed out the skate track but left the classic track which is still in decent shape.
Please pick up your trash and dog pop with the supplied Mutt Mitt station.
