GTNP Grooming Starting Today!

Recent snowfall has provided enough additional coverage that the groomer will begin today, grooming the multiple passes to South Jenny. Will make the full run to Signal on Friday, and will groom to South Jenny again on Sunday. The schedule will be the same as last year.

Fat Biking Around Jackson & Teton Valley

Fat biking is expected to be much more popular this winter due to the COVID-19 pandemic that not only increased outdoor recreation activity in the summer and fall, but also has caused the ski areas in Jackson to limit their lift capacity. People are likely to spread out throughout Jackson Hole and Teton Valley to participate in a greater variety of activities, including fat biking. Since social distancing is done easily on bikes, fat biking will be a great way to participate in some safe, healthy, winter fun this year.

With help from Chris Owen at Friends of Pathways and David Hunger from Teton Mountain Bike Tours, we have put together information on operation updates, gear recommendations, and responsible recreation for fat biking this winter.

It Keeps on Coming!
Three inches of very light snow has fallen since yesterday’s grooming, moving us ever forward in our quest for Nordic Nirvana.  While still a ways from being able to do all that we hope to do, if you are lucky enough to make it out today you will find some really nice skiing.

Today’s grooming was with the Pisten Bully and was basically a single skate only pass on the National Forest trails with double passes and fresh classic tracks on the rest of the trails.  You will notice some additional recent grooming in the close field which is in preparation for Saturday’s race.

Speaking of Saturday’s race, high school coach Katie wanted to be sure that the spectator situation was clarified.  At the upcoming race NO spectators will be allowed, only racers and volunteers.  Hopefully everyone understands and will ski accordingly.  Look for the race course to be posted in the coming days.  There is still plenty of Trail Creek and you should still be able to get a ski in even while the race is going on if that is your time slot.

We had an interesting visitor today in the woods, a red fox.  While he was not about to stand around for a perfect image, he wasn’t too concerned with human presence and based upon the tracks he left as grooming progressed, was pretty much cruising all over the place.

Groomer’s choice for today is Homeward Bound with first of the year classic tracks.

We have some fresh snow and conditions will be nice this weekend! Look for full grooming with the snowcat next week if the forecast is correct!

We are looking for volunteers to help out this season primarily during the holidays (Dec 19-Jan 3). Work 2 full days or 4 half days in exchange for a season pass.

The work will be getting people into rental skis, poles and boots and answering general questions. All renters will be outside getting geared up this season to keep things safe and to comply with CDC guidelines. We are fully masked and taking all covid precautions so that everyone stays healthy!

Slowly but surely the snow is beginning to fall. We are still a healthy foot away from being able to occasionally utilize the Pistenbully/Snowcat. This weekend’s forecast is calling for some promising accumulations and should increase the potential of opening additional Nordic activities in the following week(s). Anticipate early season conditions to persist through the weekend and reminder that the track is currently available for Nordic Skiing only. Please see the following restrictions for the upcoming week:

  • Dog Loops & All Nordic Skiing Trails OPEN
  • Sled Hill CLOSED UNTIL MORE SNOW
  • Snow Shoeing CLOSED UNTIL MORE SNOW
  • Casual Walking Not Permitted
  • Classic Tracks Not Set… NEED MORE SNOW
  • Early Season Conditions
  • Grooming is currently via Snowmobile and Ginzu Attachment (No Snowcat/Pistenbully until more snow)
  • **Ski with Caution this Week!…Current Depths and Coverage are Very Deceiving due to the recent Light/Dry Snowfall**

Next Update will be on Monday 12/21 or whenever conditions dramatically change. Enjoy!

Happy Hour got a good groom today. All the other trails are rider packed and ripping fast. Some of the sun exposed areas on hillbender are really soft mid-day. Be careful to avoid creating mud and snow ruts by riding early and late when temp are colder to help take care of this resource. We need more snow before we groom the rest of the Singletrack trails. Enjoy the ride!
