A Great Weekend In Jackson Hole and Teton Valley

This was a wonderful weekend to be a resident or visitor in Jackson Hole and Teton Valley, especially if you enjoy, or are curious about, cross country skiing, fatbiking, snowshoeing, winter trails, and public lands. The following is primarily a recap of all the fun that was had on both sides of the Tetons this past weekend. If you weren’t able to join in at any of the events don’t fret – there is still more winter, more snow in the forecast, and lots more opportunities to recreate responsibly.

A Great Day For A Race!

On Saturday the Teton Ridge Classic had over 125 registered racers. It was a great day on the Southern Valley Trails in Victor, ID groomed that morning with the new Snow Rabbit. Congratulations to the race organizers, TVTAP, and to the racers as well!

A Great Day For A Community Event!

The Annual JH Nordic Alliance Free Ski, Fatbike, and Snowshoe Event at Turpin Meadow Ranch offered so much fun for all. A diverse crowd of over 650 participants and many of their furry friends (dogs) showed up to enjoy their public lands (Bridger-Teton National Forest) and try a wide variety of human powered activities. There was such great energy, many first time skiers, people from all over, and most importantly: everywhere one looked people were smiling and making connections with each other and this place. But don’t just take our word for it, there were many kind comments from today:

Such a fabulous event today !! Beautiful day… perfect venue … so many wonderful people all sharing the love for this amazing place we call home… thanks for all JH Nordic Alliance does to make this such a success! Congratulations on a great time for all! -MM

Thank you for coordinating and hosting a wonderful Nordic etc event at Turpin Meadow. It was a magical day! -I&C

This event is what is because of the community involved, that includes you our readers! A huge thank you to all of the JH Nordic Alliance sponsors and members, we would not have been able to facilitate the merriment without you all! Thanks to Turpin Meadow Ranch for hosting! And thank you to all who came up and tried something new, our hope is you made positive lasting memories.

2+1+3=6!
While that may be some pretty simple math it adds up to more snow in the past three days than we’ve had for some time and this week looks like it is going to keep on coming.  Today’s grooming began with the Ginzu groomer making at least a single pass through most trails in the woods with two passes on Moose Loop and an additional classic track pass on Armin’s and Animal Farm.

By the time the Close Field was being set, the snow had accumulated enough that it was overwhelming the Ginzu so our trusty Husky got to make a pass.  The Ginzu was able to finish up the field grooming but conditions are best of the year in the Close Field.

This week looks to be very busy with a massive race next weekend; look for all the details in tomorrow’s grooming report.

Groomer’s choice for today is the Close Field.

Staff went up Game Creek on Saturday. Weekend storm was a bust. Snowmobile and pull behind took a real beating so we pulled out before getting into the sunny areas. We need 3-4” of wet snow or more fluffy snow to keep grooming.

Cache Creek Singletrack

Grooming As Needed

Last Update: 12/10
We groomed the Cache Creek road to Noker Mine and upper Hagen from bridge 5 to 2.  The lower trails are still a little thin on snow, especially under the trees, but are still compact enough to use for now.  We will keep snowshoeing around and packing things in until there is enough snow to take the roller through.

Please help support trail grooming for the Cache Creek Single track trails by donating to the Friends of Pathways.  Visit: friendsofpathways.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Grooming” in the campaign section.

We ginzu groomed the skate track this am and the conditions are good for skate skiing (aside from a few thin corners/ditches). The classic track go a little bit of a refill from the new snow but we still are not able to groom new classic tracks until we get some snow. Hopefully things take a drastic turn this week. The forecast is showing 31″ in the 10 day outlook!

Shooting Star

Grooming As Needed
Last Update: 1/5
Rumors of snow are starting to happen! Look for light snow of 1-2” over the weekend, which should help freshen up the currently open sections. Despite the new snow, early season conditions persist and select trails will continue to remain closed for the time being. Outlook is calling for larger amounts of “dry/light” snowfall as frigid cold front arrives around Tuesday. Once heavier snow arrives, the trails will likely go through an awkward transitional phase, as snowfall amounts and drifting could be significant enough to make snowmobile grooming very difficult, yet not enough snow to utilize the Pistenbully snowcat. Next update will be Monday 1/8. Enjoy and let hope lots of snow next week!

  • Trail conditions are early season. Please ski with caution as the snow profile is extremely thin.
  • Walking is not allowed.
  • No classic tracks will be set, and sporadic bare/brushy/exposed areas may be present.
  • Grooming frequencies will be as needed to preserve the track.
  • Sled Hill is Closed. Needs ample snow (2FT).
  • Temporary closures of the Nordic Course may be needed until additional snow accumulates if severe melt occurs.
  • Small game/scavenger animals may be present throughout the whole course. Use extra caution when skiing with dogs.
