Ask a Naturalist: How to Identify Male and Female Bison
Can you tell the difference between a bull (male) and a cow (female) bison?  Both sexes have horns, meaning even experienced wildlife watchers can be challenged when sexing bison.  That’s why we try to use multiple methods of identification.  Careful observation in four main areas; horn shape, horn size, head shape, and body characteristics are how we tell the difference.  Read on to learn more, and test your bison knowledge with a fun quiz!

Trip Report: Rammel Mountain Road, Teton Valley

Rammel Mountain Road has long been on our list of Teton Valley trails to explore, intrigued by its inclusion on the TVTAP “groomed” trails page. Located north of Driggs , north of South Leigh Canyon trail , we ventured up there this week. Groomed by the Caribou-Targhee USFS by snowmobile approximately once a week (last groomed date was Jan 21st), the trail follows the summer dirt road known by a few locals as a great gravel/mountain bike ride in summer/fall.

The trail climbs uphill for the first mile following a ridge through dense forest. Occasional breaks in the trees reveal a stunning view of the Grand Teton and Grand Targhee (Fred’s Mountain) to the south. The trail eventually flattens out, though continues to climb gently, heading east into the western foothills of the Tetons. Good trail if you are ready for some uphill climbing, solitude, and OK with a snowmobile packed trail on most days.

Note that the trail is part of the snowmobile trails popular on weekends, so we recommend mid-week.

Snow on the Way!
Not that we’ve been suffering too much, but it does look like steady snow fall is on the way for the rest of the week.  The chart above shows total accumulation by sunrise of each date shown.  If all goes according to plan we’ll be approaching a foot by Sunday.  Speaking of charts, Coach Will has produced a very beautiful spreadsheet showing the practice schedule for all groups associated with JHSC, including masters for the next few weeks.

Today at Trail Creek you’ll find some very nice skiing.  The Pisten Bully covered nearly every trail today with a best line skate pass.  Classic tracks were mostly untouched but are also mostly in good shape.  If you check that schedule you’ll see that no teams are practicing today at Trail Creek so if you can make it out you should have plenty of space.

Groomer’s choice for today is Shades of Gray.

Teton Pines Nordic

With the new grooming snow cat, and an inch of soft snow, trails at The Pines were silky smooth, fast today. The JH Nordic Masters skate ski clinic was fun, practicing V2 technique and drills, and simply skiing!Check out the new snow cat for grooming perfection, just arrived this morning! We tested the before and after. The new groomed corduroy was silky smooth, nice and wide…will be a great bonus!

Daily grooming, wide corduroy skate ski lanes with well defined classic tracks make for excellent ski conditions. Skate and classic cross country ski/ boots/ pole rentals. If you want to explore Grand Teton NP and the Jackson Hole area on xc skis, we carry the must have xc ski trail guidebook for our region in the shop:

Also, conditions may still have some icy sections and will trend towards being hard packed until our next storm cycle.
