Alta Skiathlon Recap

Saturday was the Alta Vista Skiathlon, a fun community race put on by TVTAP. Skiers came from Moran, Jackson, Pinedale, Pocatello, Idaho Falls and Teton Valley. Dan Verbeten, executive director of TVTAP, closed out the event with “we work on trails… but we build community.”

Photos Left to Right: 1) All of the 7k and 16k skiers, individuals and teams, started together for the classic leg. 2) The anticipatory focus of a few young racers at registration. 3) People catching up with each other in the stadium.

Winter Tips from Teton County Weed and Pest

February 26 – March 3 is National Invasive Species Awareness Week. Even though our landscape is mostly snow covered and frozen, there are easy and fun things you can do to help protect our ecosystem.

  • Remember to PlayCleanGo in the winter, too. Seeds from invasive species, like houndstongue, can stick to clothing and gear even in the snow. Clean gear, clothing, and pets after skiing to stop the spread of invasive species.
  • Make sure pesticides are stored out of reach of children and pets. Keep pesticides in a cool (but not cold), dry, well-ventilated area such as an attached garage.
  • Start planning your summer flower garden. Planting native species prevents the introduction of invasive species and supports our native pollinators.

Want to learn more? Register for a webinar at nisaw.org/events/ or learn click through to resources on the Teton County Weed & Pest website tcweed.org.

If pesticides have frozen, people have two options: test the efficacy by mixing and using a small amount of the pesticide in the spring and/or dispose of the pesticide through Teton County ISWR Household Hazardous Waste.  https://tetoncountywy.gov/325/Schedule-an-Appointment

February Trail of the Month: The ‘Hidden Lakes’ of Grand Teton National Park

Before the temperatures begin to warm up, and the snow gains more heat over the longer days of the coming weeks, now is the time to go for a classic ski tour to see one of the many frozen lakes in Grand Teton National Park. With average February temperatures in the Tetons ranging from 5 to 33 ℉, the chill still lingers, presenting an ideal opportunity to explore the serene beauty of the region’s frozen, thus hidden, lakes. We’ve put together all you need to know about 4 classic ski tours to “hidden lakes” in Grand Teton National Park.

Volunteers Needed!

March 8-10, 2024
Pinedale, Wyoming

For the last 100 years Wyoming cowboys have “drifted” their cattle each fall out of the mountains where they go to to the desert for the winter. In this epic event racers experience Wyoming– under Wyoming’s terms–Wyoming style. Individuals choose a discipline–Ski, Bike, Run– then set out to complete the course before mother nature finds a way to finish it for them. Volunteers are needed on Sunday, March 10th for the 13 and 28 mile events. Interested in helping out? Email Keri: keri.koger@gmail.com

We encourage winter trail users to support all of our grooming teams across Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. When possible please consider a donation to the trails you frequent. Please leave a comment such as “grooming” or “Nordic” in the designation or campaign section.

Trail Creek

Last Update 2/25

Weather on the Horizon!
The sunrise was beautiful, if a bit tempestuous this morning as another day of Nordic skiing dawned at Trail Creek.  After a dry week, a winter storm is once again in store, with heavy snowfall forecast to begin around 9 AM Monday.  This storm is supposed to come with some significant winds with forecasts of gusts up to near 50 mph; sometimes they funnel down the canyon and hit Trail Creek, sometimes not, however a freshening of the snow will be lovely, and it might be one of those magical days to ski for those dressed appropriately.

Today is a lovely day to ski as well.  The temperature at the cabin is already at 40º with moderate breezes.  The Husky did an early morning groom of nearly every trail in the woods with results being mostly positive.  A few areas that had frozen especially hard came up a bit crunchy, but skiing should be fast and pretty nice.  The fields were groomed a little later after warming and are also firm and fast with pretty nice corduroy.  Animal Farm, Moose Poop, Woolsey Woods, and the fields all received multiple passes, classic tracks were reset in the fields and where needed.

Groomer’s choice for today is Moose Poop.
