Shooting Star and Teton Nordic Ski School continue to offer Nordic ski lessons, a great way to enhance your technique and have fun during these final weeks of grooming!

WILD NATURE

by Cathy Shill, founder of The Hole Hiking Experience

“Over the winter glaciers, I see the summer glow. And through the wind-piled snowdrift, the warm rosebuds below.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Springtime is the land awakening! I notice the changes in Jackson Hole by sight and sound. We align with longer days and feel supported by increased light as motivation. This increased light spurs changes in all of nature. The stronger light wakes bears, and the first grizzlies have been seen in Yellowstone. Additional light causes hormonal changes so antlers grow, rodents’ mate and birds return to the valley. The sound of nature increases with the trill of the red-wing blackbird, the song of the chickadee, and rushing water.

Corn snow is a sign of spring. Corn snow forms when we reach the point in the season where air temperatures continue to drop below freezing at night and above freezing during the day. Recent weather created ideal conditions.

As winter releases its grip on the landscape, animals will begin to move to summer territories. Remember, March and April are vulnerable months for large animals such as deer, moose, elk, and bighorn sheep. They burn stored fat to survive winter, so they are weakest at this time of year. Fortunately, some grass is turning green on south and east-facing slopes.  Remember, seasonal winter closures that protect habitat for animals continue until May 1.

Enjoy this change of season. For our team of naturalists, we will offer winter tours until April 7 then take a break for snow to melt and trails to dry. The summer hiking season begins May 6. As the season ends, I am grateful that we had a wet March and snowpack is currently 99% of average which makes for happy flowers and sets the stage for all the beauty to come.

We encourage winter trail users to support all of our grooming teams across Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. When possible please consider a donation to the trails you frequent. Please leave a comment such as “grooming” or “Nordic” in the designation or campaign section.

Trail Creek

Grooming Daily
Last Update 3/23

FIS Race 1 Week From Today!

Looking at the FIS (International Ski and Snowboard Federation) Nordic racing schedule, there are Nordic ski areas in Switzerland, Germany, Estonia, Turkey, Norway, Poland, Finland, and Switzerland. And then there’s little old Trail Creek for 30 March-01 April, 1 week from today!  It will be a fantastic experience to have skiers from all over the world checking out what we have to offer and, while the warm weather has reduced our snow a bit, a cooler and snowy week ahead should guarantee good skiing conditions for this epic event.  Word is that volunteers are still needed, so if you’re in town and interested, check out the opportunities.

Between now and race day you should also be able to find plenty of good skiing.  If you make it out today you will discover that the Husky was out late in the day yesterday, covering most every trail.  The woods trails received a single skate/classic pass and the field trails mostly received multiple passes.  You will find quite a bit of new routing in the Close Field in preparation for the upcoming races.

Conditions have been starting very firm early in the day, softening as temps warm, although the snow has stayed quite firm throughout the day, considering how warm it has been lately.

Groomer’s choice is to check out some of the new grooming in the fields.
