Cache Creek and Nelson Drive Trailhead Updates

Mid-March typically brings melting snow, potholes, and slush. This year is no different. The Cache Creek road remains in pretty good shape although watch for potholes. However, the parking area has large pockets of water, slush and ruts. Conditions can change quickly so recreationists are advised that high clearance vehicles may be necessary within the parking area. The Nelson Drive trailhead is not plowed so conditions at this time of year preclude vehicle use. Several vehicles have become stuck this week so the parking area will be closed starting Thursday March 12^th until the snow melts.

Last Day for GTNP Grooming this Sunday

Last day for GTNP grooming is this Sunday. Last full groom from Taggart to Signal and back is this Friday. Many thanks to Grand Teton National Park Foundation for underwriting this outstanding grooming service, and for all the community donations and support contributed.

Thanks also the the volunteer GTNP Nordic Ambassadors who assisted on this iconic trail.

Conditions remain excellent…get out and enjoy. The Park will begin plowing the closed section of the road between Taggart and Signal the following week.

Sunshine and Lots of Skiing!
A glorious Wednesday at Trail Creek today; the 10 AM temperature has already climbed to 1ºC/34ºF with nearly endless sunshine and calm winds.  Most of today’s grooming happened early yesterday evening with the results being razor sharp classic tracks and smooth skate lanes.  Conditions are just starting to soften and you should be able to find good skiing for the rest of the day.

Lots of great skiing news today:

• The crust at Trail Creek was skate-able today without a doubt and should be good on cold morning going forward.
• Skate sprint racing commences shortly today at nationals in California.  To follow along go to the My Race Results page and search for Soda Springs.
• A dedicated member of Trail Creek reported a great YouTube channel about biathlons, click on the image below to check it out.

Look for evening grooming most likely for the short term although the weather looks to turn cold and snowy looking ahead which will influence scheduling.

Groomer’s choice for today is to find your favorite snow and ski it.

Trails are in great shape and will favor fans of fast skate skiing. The recent warm weather has transitioned our snowpack into a hard-packed and icy surface. Due to the firmness of the snow, classic tracks will not be set today and likely for the remainder of the season. Also, skiers should anticipate icier/fast conditions in the mornings that should evolve to softer/slushy snow in the afternoons as the temperature warms. Outlook is calling for a wintery mix of rain & snow to pass through this weekend. Have fun and enjoy the spring conditions!

From our Nordic track maintenance team:

With rising temperatures and winter coming to an end, adjustments will be made to the route of the groomed trail. Beginning this past weekend, the trail will only be groomed on the north side of Spring Gulch Road.

This accomplishes two important things. For one, it allows us to extend the grooming period of the season because as the roadways clear it becomes increasing difficult and unsafe for the staff to cross the roads with grooming equipment. In addition, suspending grooming operations south of Spring Gulch Road helps us minimize disturbances to the local moose population. In general, please be extra mindful not to disturb wildlife during this important period for their winter survival.

Out on the mountain we have had no new snow in the last 24 hours, although the sun is forecasted to come out today with mostly sunny skies and a high of 30. Expect the sun to soften up the snow that fell during the early evening on Monday. Winds are currently South/Southwest at 22 mph on the summit and 6 mph at the base.

Nordic: Got the Golf Course and CCC Ponds groomed this morning. Chilly, 6F degrees with a slight breeze. Sun is shining.
