Trail Creek XC classic Trail Report

5 of us gathered for a XC classic tour this morning at Trail Creek. Steve the Ski Club groomer was out grooming on his trusty snowmobile-Ginzu groomer. Classic track was still in good shape, skate track was freshly groomed with a dusting of fresh snow to soften the stride.

And the crust was firm, to allow for some cross-meadow crust cruising!

A moose family was quietly browsing in Woolsey Woods, the creek was babbling near Beaver Ponds. Serene, lovely skiing.

Sunday Morning at Deception Creek

Beautiful morning skiing Deception Creek loop.  Fresh snow, beautiful view from the overlook, temps in the high 20s.

It was a gray and misty day…!

It was a gray and misty day as Ralph and Mabel strapped into their Nordic skis. The burdens of the world had been weighing heavily on them but as they ventured out onto the fresh Ginzu skate grooming at Trail Creek their troubles began to melt away.

With the temperature just at freezing and nearly an inch of fresh snow having fallen all ready, their skis ate up the miles on the firm but fast trails. While they noticed that the classic tracks had not been reset today, they were still mostly quite usable. By the end of their outing they had covered most major trails and encountered similar nice conditions everywhere. The great Nordic ski had refreshed their minds, making the world a brighter place, things were going to be great!

Seriously speaking things are looking pretty good today at Trail Creek. Racing at Junior Nationals begins this afternoon. While you will have to purchase a pass to enjoy the live streaming, the proceeds go to a good cause. All the details are below.

Groomer’s choice for today is a nice long ski.

Grooming Daily

We are closing early (3pm) on Tuesday March 3, but will resume normal hours on Wednesday March 4 (9am-4pm).

Conditions are still good and holding steady but watch the thermometer as we are in some pretty serious freeze/thaw cycles from now until the end of the season. The skiing will be best late morning after the temps begin to raise. Skate skiing conditions are typically awesome this time of year but classic track skiing conditions can vary drastically. The warm days make resetting the classic track challenging so please bear with us as we rapidly approach the end of the season! We’ve had incredible ski conditions and grooming for the past 100 days—so please thank our great groomers(Mike, Mark, and Curt)when you see them!

Our entire classic rental fleet is on sale now as we prepare to bring in a new rental fleet next season!
Classic package:
Salomon Snowscape 7 skis
Salomon Escape/Siam/etc boots
Swix poles
Total: $275 (dates for pickup vary on size you need—call us for details).

We have spring gloves, base layers, hats, jackets and a few pairs of pants remaining! We also have great deals on classic, BC, and skate skiing poles, boots, and skis!

Trails are in great shape and will favor fans of fast skate skiing. The recent warm weather has transitioned our snowpack into a hard-packed and icy surface. Due to the firmness of the snow, classic tracks will not be set today and likely for the remainder of the season. Also, skiers should anticipate icier/fast conditions in the mornings that should evolve to softer/slushy snow in the afternoons as the temperature warms. Outlook is calling for a wintery mix of rain & snow to pass through this weekend. Have fun and enjoy the spring conditions!

Grooming Today
Update: 3/9

From our Nordic track maintenance team:

With rising temperatures and winter coming to an end, adjustments will be made to the route of the groomed trail. Beginning this past weekend, the trail will only be groomed on the north side of Spring Gulch Road.

This accomplishes two important things. For one, it allows us to extend the grooming period of the season because as the roadways clear it becomes increasing difficult and unsafe for the staff to cross the roads with grooming equipment. In addition, suspending grooming operations south of Spring Gulch Road helps us minimize disturbances to the local moose population. In general, please be extra mindful not to disturb wildlife during this important period for their winter survival.

While many of us dream of clipping into our skis for early-season skiing in Jackson Hole, this November, you can still see the roots and rocks beneath your feet.
