Early Season Nordic Skiing

Grand Targhee
Grooming coming soon with no classic set tracks in early season. Be sure to purchase a Nordic day or season pass at the Grand Targhee ticket office to support grooming and trail maintenance.

Togwotee Pass
We currently discourage going up to Togwotee due to active bear sightings. While there is snow coverage on Togwotee, and Flagstaff Road Trail has been lightly groomed/packed, mainly by snowmobile use, grizzlies are not yet in hibernation. If you do choose to go, bring bear spray, be alert, and and ski in a group (do not go out alone ).

Teton Pass to Mt Elly
Skier track out to Mt Elly is well packed, could be slick in places. Bring kicker skins for better traction. Snow pack is thin so go slow, be aware of logs and rocks.

Teton Pines Nordic
Grooming will begin as soon as 6+ inches falls to create a base. Check daily trail reports for the most up-to-date information.

Other grooming start date schedules are listed on JHNordic.com/Grooming/

Parks and Recreation Winter Service Levels – Grooming update

The Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department is preparing for winter services by evaluating staff and resources available for winter services. Below is a list of anticipated winter service levels:

·         The Parks Division is responsible for 14 miles of sidewalk clearing and nearly 35 miles of pathway clearing to ensure commuter connectivity during the winter.  In addition, staff builds and maintains 4 ice rinks in Teton County: Teton County Fairgrounds, Owen Bircher riding arena, Powderhorn ballfield, and Alta school area.  Staff also groom, or support the grooming of, approximately 42 miles of trails weekly in Teton County.  The Parks staff are also responsible for ensuring safe access to all publicly owned buildings within the Town and County.

·         The Parks Division would like to ask for the community’s patience with timing and quality of groomed trails as new grooming staff are currently being trained.  Due to staffing shortages, the high school track will not be groomed on Saturdays.  If it is determined that staff can accommodate grooming at the high school on Saturdays, it will be added back into the grooming schedule. Grooming activities should not be affected by snow events unless avalanche danger is moderate or high in the backcountry or if conditions dictate that staff can’t perform safely due to visibility or an ongoing snow event. Grooming schedules can be found on the website referenced below. Staff will be utilizing the Nordic Pulse application to update grooming activities in real time at jhnordic.com. The link is also on the Parks and Recreation website.
https://jhnordic.com/grooming/   http://www.tetonparksandrec.org/1353/Grooming-Report

·         Sidewalk and Pathway plowing maps can be found in the Pathways section of the Parks and Recreation website.  Please be aware that based on the snow event, staffing and resources, staff will prioritize sidewalk clearing starting in the Town core and working outward.  Maps of routes can be found here: http://www.tetonparksandrec.org/1356/Pathways

Winter wildlife closures begin Friday on Bridger-Teton

Areas of crucial wildlife winter range that close to all human presence include Josie’s Ridge, the KC trail, Wilson Canyon, the slopes above the Putt-Putt trail, the slopes north of the Game Creek trail and portions of the Gros Ventre drainage. Exceptions include Lower Spread Creek and Coal Mine Draw, west of the Hatchet Road on the Jackson and Blackrock Ranger Districts. Closures for those areas will begin Dec. 15.

GTNP seeks public input on Colter Bay Legacy planning

The National Park Service (NPS) is at the beginning of a master planning effort to reestablish Colter Bay as a key destination and central location for all visitors in Grand Teton National Park. The NPS is seeking public input from November 13 to January 11, 2024, on a range of planning concepts focused on improving visitor use and experience in the Colter Bay area. Since several non-motorized winter trails start at or near Colter Bay, winter use is important to factor into the long term plan.

Shooting Star

Not Grooming Yet
Last Update: 11/24
Winter is currently off to a slow start with only 2” of snow falling yesterday. Barring an unforeseen heavy snow event, I would expect the trails to potentially be closed through mid-December. Friendly reminder that we need approximately 18” to begin grooming with the snowmobile and 24”+ for the snowcat. Once enough snow has fallen, we will then need several days to pack and prep trails prior to opening. Outlook is calling for dry weather over the next 7 days, followed by a chance of a snow returning on Sunday, December 3rd.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.
