Teton Pines Update
With the new grooming snow cat, and an inch of soft snow, trails at The Pines were silky smooth, fast today. The JH Nordic Masters skate ski clinic was fun, practicing V2 technique and drills, and simply skiing!
Finding a Foothold for Nordic Skiing in Rural Alaska
Photographs and Text by Seth Adams | New York Times
Much like our JH Ski Club Nordic Program, serving 130 local children in Jackson Hole, as well as Coombs Outdoors, this beautiful story in the New York Times highlights connecting with local youth through Nordic skiing.
It was minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and a lot of the children were wearing jeans. They forgot to bring snow pants again. But they wanted to go skiing anyway, and that’s why we were there, so we took them skiing — even if a few of the less appropriately dressed kids turned back early.
I was in Nulato, a Koyukon Athabascan village of a couple hundred people that sits on the lower Yukon River in Alaska’s western interior, volunteering as a ski coach with a program called Skiku — a playful portmanteau of the Inupiaq word for ice, siku, and the English word ski.

Horse and Carriage!
The Lollipoppers were out in force yesterday having what looked like a wonderful time playing horse and carriage. Thanks to Coach Kathy for the great shot. Perhaps this could be something fun to do with your significant other…maybe not?
The Lollipoppers and Teewinots are done with their training for the week and today will be a light practice day with only the oldest groups training and possibly not even at Trail Creek. The big news du jour is Friday and Saturday’s high school races which begin at noon each day. The race course will be closed to the public although spectators practicing Covid safety will be allowed. The course can be viewed here.
Today’s Pisten Bully grooming focused mainly on the race courses, laying the prep work for some good racing tomorrow. The trails however are all in nice shape today. Temps are quite moderate and the snow actually seemed to soften a bit overnight. You’ll find crisp classic tracks and firm fast skate lanes pretty much everywhere.
Unless the forecast changes dramatically this afternoon, the next grooming will be tonight for tomorrow’s race.
Groomer’s choice for today is to ski the Friday Course.

The JH Nordic Masters skate ski clinic was fun, practicing V2 technique and drills, and simply skiing!Check out the new snow cat for grooming perfection, just arrived this morning! We tested the before and after. The new groomed corduroy was silky smooth, nice and wide…will be a great bonus! No new snow overnight tonight. The trail groomed very nicely so classic, and skate skiing should be great! The fat bike single track should be nice a firm as well. If you’re new to skiing or wanting to refine your skills, book a ski lesson with our professional ski instructor Elee (she also does guided tours)! She is a wealth of knowledge and can help take your Nordic skiing, whether it be skate or classic, to the next level!
