Fuel for Your Adventure

Mountain sports require grit and endurance. If you’re snowshoeing, fat biking, or Nordic skiing in the winter, you need to fuel your body! Peak fitness requires healthy and adequate nutrition. There are books devoted entirely to ultramarathon nutrition—not even running! Why? Because you need to prioritize what you eat in the mountains. Proper nutrition keeps you energized, alert, and most importantly—healthy in the backcountry. Sometimes choosing trail snacks is more of a chore than anything else. If you’re annoyed with grabbing the same trail mix and granola bar each time you pack for an adventure, take a peek at our Jackson Hole trail snacks guide for some new inspiration. And let us know your favorite trail fuel by emailing trailconditions@jhnordic.com.
Bring Your Trail Snacks to Darby Canyon

The Darby Creek Trail in Darby Canyon, located within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, offers a peaceful and relatively easy winter adventure for skiers and fat bikers. Following a snow-covered road along the canyon floor and creek, the trail features a flat to gently uphill grade on the outbound journey, making it ideal for a quiet and accessible outing. While snowmobiles also use the trail, it remains relatively tranquil, especially midweek.
The trail is open to dogs, but due to local wildlife, they should be kept close and under voice control. Unlike the steeper and switchback-heavy Wind Cave Trail, Darby Creek Trail provides a more relaxed experience, particularly for those seeking a gentler route in the western Tetons. Grooming is typically done once a week, and visitors should check with the CTNF Ranger Station in Driggs for updates. The upper portion of the trail enters the Jedediah Smith Wilderness, where grooming stops, requiring skiers to break trail or follow existing tracks.
To make the most of this outing, be sure to pack some energizing trail snacks. A thermos of hot cocoa, some high-energy granola bars, or a handful of dried fruit and nuts can keep you fueled as you take in the quiet beauty of the canyon. Whether stopping for a snack break along the creek or enjoying a mid-trail refuel, a little extra nourishment will enhance the adventure and keep spirits high.
