Trip Report: Phelps Lake from Granite Canyon Trailhead GTNP

In spite of cold morning temps Nancy L. and friends enjoyed a perfect winter day to ski to Phelps Lake. Thanks to the sun and active cross-county ski gliding, it was a superb trip. Views across the lake to Albright, Death Canyon, Mt. Prospector and nearby peaks are breathtaking in winter. The skier track is well set, making for an easy return. 4.6 miles round trip, or extend your return and ski through the meadow east of the Moose-Wilson road trail. Bring water, a hot drink, snacks and/or lunch! This is a great way to explore the southern most lake in GTNP!

If you choose to follow their recommendations and check out Phelps Lake from the Granite Canyon Trailhead use the lessons you learned from yesterday’s email and keep your eye out for wildlife tracks and a friendly grouse! This group of happy skiers encountered a curious grouse who followed them for 1/4 mile along the skier track trail, sometimes running nimbly on top of the snowpack on the side. “It was a very interesting, handsome bird!”
