Scott Horn – Nordic Masters Racer, Coach, Cyclist

Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, Scott Horn started Nordic skiing at a little Nordic center in the rural mountains–first working as a lift operator and then delving into the sport with his brothers. He continued skiing in college in Erie, Pennsylvania, then went on to help organize the Pennsylvania Cross Country Skier’s Association after college and ended up becoming the Pennsylvania Cross Country Skier Champion for one year.

Scott found his way to Jackson through a Nordic ski camp in West Yellowstone, Montana. After alpine skiing for a day at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, he happened upon a job opening at the resort for a human resources director.

Scott has been the head coach for the Jackson Hole Nordic Masters Recreation Clinics, which is now in its third season. The clinics run every other week with Nordic coaches from the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club Nordic Program joining Scott to teach small groups.

The clinics are designed to help adult skiers of all ages practice their technique while having fun and improving their fitness.

Teton Valley Trails And Pathways Challenge

SO WHAT IS THIS WINTER TRAILS CHALLENGE?
Walk, ski or ride on groomed Winter Trails this winter to raise money for TVTAP.

HOW?
Log your miles via Strava or by emailing them directly to info@tvtap.org.

DOES IT START NOW?
By all means, get after it, but the challenge doesn’t officially start until New Year’s Day.

DO I HAVE TO LOG 2000 MILES BY MYSELF?
Well, that sounds like a recipe for leg massage! Our staff and volunteers groom about 2000 miles in 6 weeks, so we are challenging the community as a whole to sign up for the challenge and beat the groomer mileage.

DO MY KIDS IN A CHARIOT COUNT TOWARDS MY MILEAGE?
Given the right argument and a friendly “please” we’re probably going to say yes. Push, pull or drag your favorite tag-along!

Thank you to our sponsors Sage Realty Group, RAD Curbside and the Community Foundation of Teton Valley for helping us bring this fun competition to life. More info is available on our website and the Winter Trails Challenge fundraising page. Get your team together and get registered to support Winter Trails in Teton Valley!

Trail Creek Nordic

Last Updated: 12/11

And So It Begins!

Snow has once again graced the trails of Trail Creek with about an inch of the glorious white frozen water falling on our trails this morning.  Temps are moderate, there are glimpses of sun between the wispy clouds, a few more flakes are still falling, and the forecast calls for snow for the foreseeable future.  It doesn’t get much better than that!

Today’s grooming was with the Pisten Bully resulting in some really nice conditions.  The close field, Armin’s, and Moose Loop received multiple passes with fresh classic tracks while most every other trail received a single pass without classic tracks.  We are very close to universal classic tracks, just need a good six inches or so some night and we will be good to go.

Groomer’s choice for today is to take some laps in the close field!

We are still patiently awaiting more snow in order to get the PistenBully out for grooming. We did get the roller/snowmobile out to Stilson in the last day or two and most other areas are skier packed at this time.

We have some fresh snow and conditions will be nice this weekend! Look for full grooming with the snowcat next week if the forecast is correct!

We are looking for volunteers to help out this season primarily during the holidays (Dec 19-Jan 3). Work 2 full days or 4 half days in exchange for a season pass.

The work will be getting people into rental skis, poles and boots and answering general questions. All renters will be outside getting geared up this season to keep things safe and to comply with CDC guidelines. We are fully masked and taking all covid precautions so that everyone stays healthy!

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, & Sunday
Last Updated: 12/11
Skate: Set | Classic: Not Set
Friday afternoon: Made 3 passes around the track with the roller to pack down, smooth out, the 3 inches of new snow. Currently have most Southern loops and outer North loop groomed, about 4.5 miles. As we receive more snow we’ll continue to groom remaining loops. We may not be on our normal winter schedule for another week or so until we get everything dialed in. Snow cover still remains thin in places, but certainly skiable.

Skate: Not Set | Classic: Not Set
I am planning on heading out to groom early Saturday morning. Should be ready for skiing by first light. There has been several inches of new snow throughout the day today which should provide enough to be able to set a classic track. With a nice firm level base under, I am anticipating great skiing tomorrow! Come out and enjoy!

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday
Last Updated: 12/10
Skate: Set | Classic: Not Set
The initial Skate Track has been set in preparation of the incoming storm. No classic track is set however. Please be aware of the thin snowpack and hazards that come with this. As more snow piles up, the track will improve and continued grooming should be the norm as we move towards grooming on the scheduled days. Enjoy the glide. I plan on grooming again early evening on Friday 12/11.

Please plan to ride in the early am and late pm when temperatures are colder to avoid making ruts. Enjoy the ride!
