Trip Report – Darby Canyon
40 minutes from Wilson, one canyon south of Driggs, a favorite summer hiking destination, Darby Canyon offers a beautiful classic xc ski, fat bike or snowshoe. Trail begins at the edge of the valley, follows the summer road to the Wilderness boundary just west of the trailhead for the Wind Cave hike. 8.7 miles, with 800 ft of vertical rise in total. Follows Darby Creek in a beautiful valley, crossing the creek several times, through meadows, forests, pine and aspen glades. Trail is groomed “as needed” by Caribou-Targhee USFS.
FAQ: Taggart to Signal Grooming in GTNP
Does the groomer put the tracks in on the way out or on the way back from Signal?
“I have people ask if the track can be set first quite often. However if the track is set first it will get covered on the second pass. Also skate skiers cannot ski without a skate lane classic skiers can ski without a track. Skate lane first track setter second. This is for every trail system that has two passes or more. One pass gets a track set during the pass.” – The Groomer in GTNP

Great Day to Ski!
The teams are off racing and the Teewinots pictured above gazing at clouds (thanks to Coach Kathy) and Lollipoppers only ski on Mondays and Wednesdays, so if you come on out to Trail Creek today you could have the trails all to yourself.
If you’d like to follow the high school race in Casper, the Casper Mountain webcam is live and showing lots of activity for today’s and tomorrow’s Wyoming High School Race and Saturday and Sunday’s IMD Qualifier in West Yellowstone can be followed at their website.
As of 11 AM it is cloudy with some really light snow falling at Trail Creek. The wind is calm and the temperature is cooler than it has been at -10ºC/14ºF. Today’s grooming included new Ginzu classic tracks throughout the fields. Yesterday’s classic tracks in the woods are mostly nice and the Ginzu finished the day with multiple skate passes on all trails. Classic skiing is quite nice and skate skiing while just a smidge soft, is very nice as well.
Groomer’s choice for today is Armin’s.

The trails groomed beautifully this morning, though the snow is a bit soft it is still quite fast! Tomorrow (Saturday) is supposed to be quite sunny so it may get even softer throughout the day. Bring your dog!

We purchased a new groomer 2 years ago so we do now have a set cross country track with enough room for skate skiers and/or fat bikes next to the set track.
There are no other services available (ie. No lunch) though dinner is offered Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings beginning at 5:30pm; Clubhouse amenities are reserved for members only.
We groom the track on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays

With over 12 feet in January, it’s safe to say it’s been one for the books. We’ve somehow already completed an entire month in the year 2020. We may have had a later start this year snowfall wise, but Mother Nature sure is making up for it.
Cross Country/Fat Bike 15k: XC OPEN (Last groomed 1/30/2020), Fat Bike CLOSED.
Pinedale

Nordic: All trails above groomed this morning. Road and parking areas plowed. 18F degrees. There is a high school alpine ski race at White Pine today, so there will be more cars in the parking lot and more people on the hill. There are still numerous moose around – please control your dogs. Thank you for pitching the poo off the trails. Planning on getting the Golf Course groomed by noon today. Will do CCC trails tomorrow.
Fat Bike 1/30: Lower and upper Kelly Park single track have been groomed as of today. A good base is in place but remember with warmer temperatures adjust tire pressure accordingly to reduce chances of breaking through. Looks like a great weekend to get out and enjoy the wonderful Pinedale outdoors!
