When it was so windy on Thursday I stopped at the library and picked up the book “Cross Country Skiing: Building Skills for Fun and Fitness” by Steve Hindman. It is full of nuggets of wisdom and a good reminder that while grooming is winding down in many places it does not equate the end of the season: “Cross country skiing offers freedom and fun wherever you find snow. You’re not restricted to the marked trails of summertime or the designated slopes of an alpine resort. Veer off familiar paths and discover secrets in your own backyard or hidden treasures at more distant ski destinations.” This truth was highlighted in yesterday’s trail report.

• Yeti’s Loop is closed today and tomorrow for the Western Club Championships race; the fat bike trails and campground loops will be open to the public

• vintage snowmobile show at Turpin today from 10am – 2pm
• extra snowmobile traffic expected on Togwotee this weekend for the Pink Ribbon Ride, a fundraising event for breast cancer patients in need.

Looking around the valleys it is hard to imagine that winter exists anywhere nearby. The reality is there is plenty of snow to enjoy in these coming weeks, you just need to get a little creative. Heading higher up in elevation to Targhee, Teton Canyon, Grand Teton National Park or Togwotee pass is going to be your best bet. Cross country skiing on freshly groomed corduroy is dwindling so now is the time to be an intrepid traveler and explore to your hearts content, making skier tracked trails and crust cruising when conditions allow.
Go have fun on your skis, snowshoes, fat bike or feet!
