Snow King Mountain announces online fundraiser to keep trails groomed for uphill skiing

Snow King Mountain Resort (SKMR), Stio, Arc’teryx, and Exum will be hosting an online fundraiser to continue to groom the mountain for uphill recreation, which includes skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and walking.

SKMR has received an exception from Teton District Health Officer Dr. Travis Riddell to allow “personal uphill recreation to occur as well as grooming.”

According to the exception, this “activity does not pose an increased public health risk and may benefit the community in having an outdoor activity to participate in.”

Fun and Safe Nature Activities to do During the Coronavirus Outbreak from Ecotour Adventures

Covid-19 is here.  We’ve been asked to self-isolate and avoid unnecessary travel.  Some of us might not be able to leave our homes at all right now.

We will get through these challenging times and Nature can help.  Though traveling to places like Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are currently not good options (EcoTour Adventures and other businesses are currently closed due to the outbreak) there are plenty of options whether within the confines of our homes, backyards, or in nearby natural areas to get a much needed dose of vitamin Nature.

Trip Report: Gros Ventre Road-Slide Lake East

Sun, snow, snow covered trail, xc ski or fatbike almost forever, deep into the headwaters of the Gros Ventre River.  Packed by winter grooming for snowmobiles, good coverage on the road/trail. Nine moose were spotted lower in the sagebrush meadows near Kelly warm springs and the Gros Ventre River. We had the place to ourselves!! Remember to contribute to Friends of Bridger-Teton

The rights and wrongs of social distancing in the backcountry

To make social distancing easier, this is the perfect time to explore trails further away from your usual.

Today, we went up to the end of the plowed section of the Gros Ventre Road. Literally saw no one except my friend and I on the trail for 2hours. We did see 9 moose, all down in the sagebrush between the roundabout at GV Junction and Kelly warm springs .

If you do go further afield, remember to bring bear spray, water, snack, warm layer, weatherproof layer. We had sun, snow, wind in a matter of minutes!

Friends of Pathways Update

Like many in Jackson, Friends of Pathways is doing its best to minimize exposure and the spread of COVID-19. This new reality means our staff is working remotely and some of our spring events are in question. However, despite the closure of so many important and valued components of our Town, the pathways are still open for business.

With spring around the corner, more pathway segments will be opening up soon. In addition, FOP’s winter single-track grooming in Cache Creek, will continue as long as weather permits, or until March 28th. Be aware of seasonal weather conditions that can make trail and pathway travel hazardous – loose gravel patches and ice in the mornings.

Trail Creek Nordic

Snow!
No, this is not today at Trail Creek, but snow and lots of it is one of the things that makes Trail Creek such a special place.  The images above are from some of the major dumps throughout the years;  it’s kind of fun to think back to the cold dark days of winter when a leaden sky over the western ridge tops turns into a maelstrom of white, draping the forest in a pristine new coat.

Today at Trail Creek you will find a bit of that delightful fresh frozen form of water, but nothing on the order of the images above.  Grooming once again happened last night with the Ginzu groomer resetting all classic tracks and skate lanes with mostly positive results.  It is forecast to cloud up this afternoon with temps staying in the 30’s so skiing should remain pretty good throughout the day.

The image above was from last night; groomer’s choice for today is Armin’s.

Grooming Daily

Springtime conditions remain as skiing will continue to be icy in the AM and slushy in the PM. Grooming will be done each evening at 530pm. Please be finished skiing and off the trails by 6pm. Skiing after we groom in the evenings causes icy lumpy tracks that freeze overnight and make for rough skiing until things thaw in the morning. Please show gratitude and respect for the trails and fellow skiers. Outlook is for light snow and rain throughout the week. Have fun and practice social distancing.

Pinedale

Nordic: Most trails groomed this morning. There’s a few inches of new snow from last night. Temp 19F degrees at the Nordic Equipment Building. The road into White Pine is open, but there are no services at White Pine lodge any more. There is a small bit of snow/ice on the road, use caution driving. Crust skiing might be sketchy for a day or two. The Golf Course is pretty much over. Recommend avoiding the CCC Ponds area – there are still a lot of deer migrating though there right now.

Fat Bike 2/13: All Lower Kelly Park is groomed with a great riding base. Should be perfect conditions for the next 3-5 days due to high pressure system. For more information contact Geared Up, 307-399-5539 c.307-760-1912, www.gearedupbikes.com

Grooming Today: Alta, Teton Springs

Alta Track

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday
Last Updated: 3/24
Skate: Excellent | Classic: Fair

I ran the ginzu around this morning, finishing around 8:30am. There was an inch or less of new snow. The skate lane looked really good when I finished, although there was some wind which may create a small amount of drifting. And it’s warm out there, so it will be soft. The classic lane is another matter. I left it in some places where it looked pretty good. I tried to reset it in some other sections and it took really well some of the time and it drifted in as soon as I set it in some others. Expect variable conditions if you use the classic lane.

Driggs

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Last Updated: 3/25
Skate: Fair | Classic: Not Set

Did not groom the classic. We may be done with classic unless mother nature gives us a break. Used the drag on the skate lane. Lots of thin spots except loop east of high school. The entire track is getting narrow in spots where starting to melt out. Overall surface soft and had a hard time filling in holes and tracks from last couple of days.

Sherman Park

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Skate: Good | Classic: N/A

Groomed this evening. Track is holding up really well!

Teton Canyon

Smoothed out the skate lane, looks like it is skiing well. Reset the classic track starting at around the group campground, with variable results. Get out and enjoy!

Teton Springs

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
Last Updated: 3/25
Skate: Excellent | Classic: Good

Last groomed this morning and finished around 9am. Overnight cold temps have brought frozen conditions. The skate came out nice and classic good in most areas.

A big thank you to Mark Heinen for shoveling the bridge crossings to preserve the snow.

For the remainder of the season I will plan to groom when conditions are suitable, and will keep posting updates to inform.

Yeti’s Loop

1/2” of new on firm base = great skiing for you! It looks like classic skiers would be able to make hard wax work in most places. It just started to snow lightly. Come ski if you can!

  • End of Season Gear Maintenance

At the end of the season, it is so tempting to just leave the skis the way they are and walk away. There is a price to pay for this though: slow skis that need to be stoneground. Here are some basic wax tips to take at the end of the season that you will be grateful for come early winter. It’s a good practice to give your bases a good cleaning after skiing in… Read More
