25 Mar 20 – Daily Trail Report

Posted by Amy Yatsuk Posted on March 25, 2020May 15, 2020

Thank you for continually sharing your photos with us of Nordic skiing in Jackson Hole

Trip Report: Gros Ventre Road-Slide Lake East

Sun, snow, snow covered trail, xc ski or fatbike almost forever, deep into the headwaters of the Gros Ventre River.  Packed by winter grooming for snowmobiles, good coverage on the road/trail. Nine moose were spotted lower in the sagebrush meadows near Kelly warm springs and the Gros Ventre River. We had the place to ourselves!! Remember to contribute to Friends of Bridger-Teton

The rights and wrongs of social distancing in the backcountry

To make social distancing easier, this is the perfect time to explore trails further away from your usual.

Today, we went up to the end of the plowed section of the Gros Ventre Road. Literally saw no one except my friend and I on the trail for 2hours. We did see 9 moose, all down in the sagebrush between the roundabout at GV Junction and Kelly warm springs .

If you do go further afield, remember to bring bear spray, water, snack, warm layer, weatherproof layer. We had sun, snow, wind in a matter of minutes!

Friends of Pathways Update

Like many in Jackson, Friends of Pathways is doing its best to minimize exposure and the spread of COVID-19. This new reality means our staff is working remotely and some of our spring events are in question. However, despite the closure of so many important and valued components of our Town, the pathways are still open for business.

With spring around the corner, more pathway segments will be opening up soon. In addition, FOP’s winter single-track grooming in Cache Creek, will continue as long as weather permits, or until March 28th. Be aware of seasonal weather conditions that can make trail and pathway travel hazardous – loose gravel patches and ice in the mornings.

Grooming Updates and Closures

As things are changing by the day, we want to update our community on grooming schedules. So far there are no changes to existing grooming schedules. But some schedules are already extended, all subject to snow:

  • Teton County Parks & Rec- Grooming extended from March 15 to the 28th
  • Trail Creek – Grooming until March 30th
  • Teton Pines Nordic Center is closed for the season. Teton Pines Nordic Shop and Clubhouse are also closed. Thanks to all for a great season!!
  • Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis – Nordic track closed for the season.
  • Shooting Star – Grooming continues for classic and skate skiers, however, NO SNOWSHOEING for the remainder of the season due to snow conditions and supervision. Please, note many trail restrictions will begin to appear as the season begins to winds down and the snow profile diminishes. The Nordic Shop will be closed until further notice.
  • TVTAP groomed trails- assume grooming will continue based on snow.
  • Snake River Sporting Club Nordic Trails closed for the season.
  • Grand Targhee – will be closed for the rest of the 2019/20 winter season, with no further grooming for the Nordic and fat bike trails. However, skiers and cyclist may use the trails.

Uphill Closures:
-Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Snow King Resort have closed for the season joining the effort to slow the spread of COVID-19

What a Good Looking Group!

In case you missed it in yesterday’s community newsletter, Coach Ben has put together an amazing slide show of all the great things that have happened this year with JHSC Nordic and Trail Creek.  The picture above as impressive as it is, just represents a small part of the greater Nordic community here in the valley.  If you haven’t done so yet, make sure you check out the slideshow link.

A few more pictures below are just a sampling of the great race shots from the year, there are lots more in the slideshow.

Today’s grooming once again happened last night with the Ginzu making the rounds in the late afternoon/early evening.  All major trails received skate grooming and the fields and Moose Loop received fresh classic tracks as well.  Today will once again be a scenario of warming conditions as the day proceeds.  A little fresh snow has fallen but it shouldn’t slow you down too much.

Thursday night lows look to be in the low teens warming to mid-30’s on Friday which should make that one of the better days of the year so far to head out to your favorite crust cruising locale.

Groomer’s choice for today is Moose Loop.

Springtime conditions remain as skiing will continue to be icy in the AM and slushy in the PM. Grooming will be done each evening at 530pm. Please be finished skiing and off the trails by 6pm. Skiing after we groom in the evenings causes icy lumpy tracks that freeze overnight and make for rough skiing until things thaw in the morning. Please show gratitude and respect for the trails and fellow skiers. Outlook is for light snow and rain throughout the week. Have fun and practice social distancing.

Nordic: Most trails above groomed this morning. About 17F degrees around 8:45AM, it’s colder up above. Recommend skiing before lunch time if possible for best conditions, soft in the afternoons. Crust skiing is firm on sunny areas in the morning. There are a lot of deer moving though the CCC Ponds trails right now – recommend avoiding that area for now.

Fat Bike 2/13: All Lower Kelly Park is groomed with a great riding base. Should be perfect conditions for the next 3-5 days due to high pressure system. For more information contact Geared Up, 307-399-5539 c.307-760-1912, www.gearedupbikes.com

Grooming Has Ended

Spring plowing began in Grand Teton National Park on Monday, March 16. The plowing operations mark the end of over-snow access on the 14-mile section of the Teton Park Road between Taggart Lake Trailhead and the Signal Mountain area.

For safety reasons, visitors may not access the Teton Park Road once plowing operations are underway.   Rotary snow removal equipment and plows may be working at any time, and the roadway will be closed to all uses at all times until further notice. Skiers and those on snow shoes using areas adjacent to the roadway are cautions to avoid the arc of snow blown from the rotary equipment because pieces of ice and gravel can be thrown great distances.

Grooming Today: Driggs, Sherman Park, Teton Canyon

Alta Track

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday
Last Updated: 3/24
Skate: Excellent | Classic: Fair

I ran the ginzu around this morning, finishing around 8:30am. There was an inch or less of new snow. The skate lane looked really good when I finished, although there was some wind which may create a small amount of drifting. And it’s warm out there, so it will be soft. The classic lane is another matter. I left it in some places where it looked pretty good. I tried to reset it in some other sections and it took really well some of the time and it drifted in as soon as I set it in some others. Expect variable conditions if you use the classic lane.

Driggs

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Smoothed skate track as best as I could. Did not reset classic track.

Sherman Park

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Last Updated: 3/23
Skate: Good | Classic: N/A

Just groomed the few inches we got over the weekend. All things considered, the track is in decent condition. I called it “good” but that’s relative to the time of day.

Teton Canyon

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Last Updated: 3/23
Skate: Fair | Classic: Fair

Mechanical issues prevent grooming this morning. Track is still in fairly decent shape from Sunday groom. We plan to remain on normal grooming schedule going forward into April, as conditions permit.

Teton Springs

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
Last Updated: 3/22
Skate: Excellent | Classic: Good

Finished grooming Sunday morning around 9am. Overnight cold temps firmed up the snow with about 2″ of new overnight. The grooming came out excellent for skate & classic tracks.

For the remainder of the season I will plan to groom when conditions are suitable, and will keep posting updates to inform.

It’s important to stay informed on snow conditio It’s important to stay informed on snow conditions so as not to miss or ruin the snow for others. It is already a narrow window that is ‘crust cursing season.’ What downhill skiers might refer to as ‘corn skiing’, the nordic community has endearingly called crust cruising – either way it’s beloved by both like-minded communities.

Early in the evening on March 22, the first grizzly bear of 2023 was observed in Grand Teton National Park. As bears become active this spring, Bear Wise Jackson Hole reminds residents and visitors to secure attractants of any kind and be bear aware.

Adult male grizzly bears typically emerge from hibernation in March, while females with young typically appear between April and early May. The first grizzly bear sighting of 2022 in the Jackson Hole area occurred on March 13 in Grand Teton National Park. When bears emerge from their dens, they search for any available foods and often scavenge animals that died during the winter.

There has also been information of potential mountain lion 🦁 activity in the same area. We have been getting reports of lion activity for the last couple of months in the same general area.
