Phelps Lake Trip Report:

Cross country skiing to Phelps Lake always offers a beautiful experience to share with friends & family. An easy classic xc ski, accessible to early all levels of skiers, especially in mid winter when the snow is soft, deep on the side of the trail, slow enough to make the occasional downhill short pitch easy and gentle.
It’s fun to be able to ski out onto the frozen lake. We saw some skiers ice fishing for Lake Trout!

And families snowshoeing, a JH Ecotour Adventure family with kids group snowshoeing for the first time. A friendly dog on leash – on the road, respecting dog in National Park guidelines.

A beautiful place in our backyard, for a Sunday morning easy adventure!! Heading home for Valentines Pancakes!

Friends of Pathways: Healthy & Responsible Recreation and Contribute Conservation Advocacy in Jackson Hole

Chris Owen is the Trails Program Manager at Friends of Pathways and works in partnership with the JH Nordic Alliance through his work grooming for fat biking and advocating for responsible trail use. Friends of Pathways is a non-profit that focuses on advocating for the completion of a safe and sustainable pathways system for healthy recreation and transportation opportunities in Jackson Hole.

At Friends of Pathways, Chris is currently collecting and analyzing trail use data to help the Forest Service with their upcoming forest-wide plan. In conjunction with other wildlife and conservation advocacy organizations, they are creating a wildlife-recreation interface map to aid in determining the location of future development.

You can learn more about Friends of Pathways and their ongoing projects at FriendsOfPathways.org, and you can find more information about fat biking in the 2020-2021 winter season here. Classic Tracks are Back!

Even though another 3 inches of champagne powder fell since yesterday’s grooming, the Ginzu groomer was able to lay in some pretty nice classic tracks today.  If you are able to make it out today you will find crisp if somewhat soft classic tracks on nearly every trail.  In addition to installing direction for classic skiers, the Ginzu didn’t forget the skaters either, hitting all those trails with additional skate passes.  The snow is soft but beautiful and should work quite well.

Racing continues today in McCall, ID for our IMD racers; our skiers have been doing well with Kate Brigham posting a 2nd place finish in her class.  Results can be viewed here

Looking ahead to this week, the older skiers will have Monday off so while it will be busy, it won’t be as busy as Wednesday. Tuesday and Friday will be pretty slow and it looks like no teams practicing on Thursday.  The Pisten Bully should be back sometime mid-week.

Groomer’s choice for today is the East Fields.

The levee and stilson are groomed and in good shape. Get out early before they are snowed in again! The school fields will be done around 10:30.

Groomed Cache to Noker 2 wide, hagen, sidewalk, hagen highway, river trail, and sidewalk around the trailhead.  The sidewalk between the trailhead and bridge 2 is wind hammered and not groomable right now by human power but everything else should set up nice with the colder temps tonight.

Shooting Star

Conditions continue to quite literally blow people away due to the severe winds that have been dominating our site. Skiers should expect windy conditions Thursday, followed by storm skiing Friday and Saturday. Good news is winds should hopefully die down to around 10mph by Saturday and Sunday appears to be the most stable day, just in time for a lovely Valentine Nordic outing. We’ll continue to do our best in leveling out the trails each morning during this adventurous stretch of weather. Enjoy and stay safe! Next Update Monday 2/15.

The Teton Park Road was not groomed on Friday, nor will be on Sunday, due to a snow cat issue. Thus, with all the new snow, the trail will only have a skier track. Stay tuned for a possible next groom on Tuesday, subject to the snow cat groomer repair.

Turpin Meadow Ranch

Lots of new snow overnight, probably around 4 inches. So the trails will be very soft today, and some flat light conditions on the flat sections. The snow is still coming down fairly heavily so it will look like we haven’t groomed today in just another few hours! If you’re new to skiing or wanting to refine your skills, book a ski lesson with our professional ski instructor Elee (she also does guided tours)! She is a wealth of knowledge and can help take your Nordic skiing, whether it be skate or classic, to the next level! To help with social distancing and to get you on the trails faster please purchase your trail passes and sign your waivers online in advance (see link below). As always, remember to recreate responsibly. Bring a mask as it is required to enter the lodge. Lunch and dinner are both by reservation only.
