Nordic Trail Report 3.28.26

‘Tis the season for multi-sport days!

With lovely weather and loads of daylight, this weekend is set up to be fabulous for celebrating all the fun options for moving across the earth, both on snow and off. My suggestion: cross country ski in the morning with a well timed crust cruise on Togwotee or a track ski on the freshly groomed trails at Grand Targhee. In the afternoon the dry land options are nearly endless but here are a few ideas: bike ride, roller blade, run, and/or walk. With the extensive selection of things to do this weekend hopefully the foundation for your activities is movement outside!

General Weather – Sunny Weekend

Mountain Weather is forecasting sunshine this weekend with precipitation returning early next week. Enjoy adventures alfresco in the mild weather.

Teton Park Road Open for Spring Recreation

The 14-mile section of the Teton Park Road between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge is cleared of snow and open to walking, running, biking and skating. Teton Park Road is expected to open to vehicles on Friday, May 1, weather depending.

Visitors should stay alert for park vehicles and heavy equipment on all park roads. Respect all road or wildlife closures marked by signs or barricades, and use caution as snow and ice may persist on some road sections.

Here are more tips and reminders to help visitors prepare for spring at Grand Teton National Park:

Dogs are allowed on the Teton Park Road on a leash no longer than six feet. Owners must clean up after their dogs and dispose waste bags in trash receptacles.

The paved multi-use pathway is open where it is mostly free of snow and ice.

Check for construction, road information and weather conditions before you visit. Construction and temporary road and wildlife closures may affect where you can go in the park. Spring weather is unpredictable and can change within hours from sunny and warm to stormy and cold.

Be alert for wildlife on park roads. Spring is an important time for ungulate migrations. Animals like bison and elk may travel on park roads.

Bears are active in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The best way to stay safe in bear country is to come prepared. Carry bear spray, keep it close, and know how and when to use it. Stay at least 100 yards away from any bear.

Drive responsibly and use caution in parking areas. The section of road between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Cottonwood Picnic Area can be busy with pedestrians and cyclists.

Bring plenty of food and water. Food and water are not available at Taggart Lake trailhead or along the Teton Park Road.

Go before you go. Restroom facilities are available at Taggart Lake Trailhead, Cottonwood Picnic Area, Signal Mountain Lodge, and starting April 10 at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center.

Leave No Trace and dispose of trash in receptacles.

Trip Reports from Togwotee

Virgia, from Peak Performance, skied Togwotee on Wednesday (3/25). She said conditions from the lost lake trailhead are melting fast! Full coverage though for a classic tour, could not skate due to no freeze.

Elee, from JH Nordic Alliance, skied at Deception Creek yesterday. Thursday night did get cold enough for a freeze so she skated. Conditions were variable, it was mighty icy to begin with and 2 hours later they were very soft. She still thinks it’s worth it to get out and glide! She too reports that there is still plenty of snow on Togwotee pass. You’ll need an early start and/or stick to the compacted snowmobile trails to extend your fun.

Go have fun on your skis, snowshoes, fat bike or feet!

Events & Info

Grooming at Grand Targhee Nordic Track

Consistent grooming happens T/Th/S/S and it is keeping the track relatively smooth. Classic track is not consistently set. There is snow, but it’s been getting warm even at Targhee. You can check Targhee temps here.

Cross Country Ski Care

Spring skiing often means traversing dirty snow. Keep those bases clean to keep your skiing efficient. The last few trail reports gave some good tips and tricks on the subject. Click the link below for articles on glide waxing for crust cruising and end of season gear maintenance.
