Western Wyoming Avalanche Advisory Issued On Mon January 13
Recommendation for Nordic skiing , snowshoeing, fat biking for today: choose trails in the woods offering wind protection, not exposed to steep slopes above.
”The avalanche danger will likely remain High at the upper elevations of the Tetons and could increase to High in the Southwest Trails and Togwotee Pass areas depending on the amount of new snow and wind received overnight and through the day. Wind loaded slopes will be sensitive to backcountry riders and skiers on a variety of aspects and elevations and could release naturally. Slabs are most likely to initiate as newly formed soft slabs but the potential also remains to trigger deep weaknesses in the snowpack. These slabs could fail after a soft wind slab is triggered or possibly by the weight of a single person finding a weak spot on a slope. Slab depths could vary from on foot to six feet at higher elevations, depending on which layer fails and on snow depths in that location. At lower elevations, slabs to two feet could be triggered.”

Howling Blizzard!
There’s a pretty impressive blizzard happening today at Trail Creek with 12:15 conditions being blustery winds, light snowfall, and a temperature of -7ºC/19ºF. Today’s grooming was mainly focused on keeping ahead of the deepening snow in the fields in preparations for this weekend’s biggest of the year races, although by the time grooming was done, one might wonder if the groomer had shown up for work or not.
While much time was dedicated to the courses that can be viewed on the Johnny Curtis Memorial Race website, the Pisten Bully did have time to make a quick single classic/skate pass through Woolsey Woods, Moose Loop, and the trails to and from so that skiers will be able to get a bit of respite from the wind if they are bold enough to venture out today. Also in anticipation of lots of afternoon skiers from kindergarten on up, Sky View Stadium was set as well.
Coach Katie sent the great pictures below from Pinedale where are skiers did a great job over the weekend. Thanks to Coach Katie for coaching them and sending the images.
While we will be focusing on the upcoming race, hopefully we’ll have time to venture into the woods this week as well. Click on this link for the tentative grooming schedule if you are interested.
Groomer’s choice for today is Woolsey Woods.

The levee and Stilson are groomed and in good shape. Both will be a bit soft until they have time to set up. I am heading to the school fields shortly and should be done around 10:00.

Come out early this weekend for fresh grooming. We will do our best to stay ahead of the heavy snowfall that will blanket the valley over the next week.
The shop is open 9am-4pm daily. We have some great deals on gear and will be selling off some of our used rental gear very soon to make room for a brand new rental fleet. Stay tuned for details on our used gear sale!

Nordic: The High School Ski Race starts at noon in Upper Surveyor Park today. Mass start, should be fun to watch. Freshly groomed this morning for both classic and skating are Half Moon Tie-In, Kelly Park, Kelly Tie-In, Upper & Lower Surveyor, Moose Ridge, Tree Loop, Powerline and Old Road Trail. Aspen and Looney Lane are flat groomed. Cold this morning, -10F degrees, now is 10F degrees. Couple inches of fresh snow this morning. Golf Course and CCC trails should be in pretty good shape. Sure do appreciate folks cleaning up after their pets. Still a number of deer and moose around – please keep pets under control. Saw a herd of elk on the way up this morning, but they are not on the trails yet.
Fat Bike: All singletrack in the Kelly Park area and upper Skyline Rd has been groomed as of 6:30AM this morning. The temperatures should make the trails exciting to ride this weekend coupled with the brilliant full moon. Take advantage of the great conditions.
