Thank you for continually sharing your photos with us of Nordic skiing in Jackson Hole

Granite Canyon Trailhead to Laurance Rockefeller Preserve

Every Thursday, this “Locals Nordic group “ goes out on a Nordic outing – sometimes a classic cross-country ski, sometimes skate ski. Sometimes, time is short, so only for a couple of hours. Or sometimes, nearly all day.

Starting from Granite Canyon trailhead, there are a number of classic touring options, all relatively flat, easy, moderate in distance. This tour crosses the meadows East of the Skier-tracked Moose-Wilson Road trail, running north to LSR Preserve. From there, there are options to loop back via the snow-covered skier-track Road, or head further east to the Snake River dike, and return via the dike. Not far away are trails leading up to Phelps Lake. Sometimes there is a skier-track, sometimes you may break your own trail. Out here you can enjoy solitude, big views of the Tetons, open spaces, passages through cottonwood, and aspen and conifer forests.

What’s in your (Nordic) Pack? 2020 Update

We love to help with trip planning for your next Nordic adventure. And one of the key components for a successful trip is preparation. Here at JHNordic we know what it is like to hop on the trail and realize you forgot something. Yeah, that’s is the worst feeling there is. Here is an update from our last What’s in Your (Nordic) Pack? blog post. Also REI came out with a sweet checklist for cross-country skiing that we took into account, because I mean, they know their gear.

TGIF Edition!
What with global pandemics and crashing stock markets if ever we needed a Thank God it’s Friday Edition, today could be it.  What better thing to do than put away the troubles of the world, grab your gear, and go out for a great Nordic ski!  While we can’t do much about the stock market, we can pretty much ensure that you won’t catch the Corona virus out here today, and exercise is always a good thing.

Today’s grooming was a mix of Pisten Bully and Ginzu grooming with all trails skiing quite well.  Freshly reset classic tracks in the field are in pretty good shape and skate lanes are firm but fast.  11 AM conditions are calm, sunny, and a very pleasant -6ºC/21ºF.

Groomer’s choice for today is a nice long Friday afternoon ski.

The track is skiing great after some intensive grooming was warranted this past week to smooth things out from Monday’s wind event. Look for more enjoyable weather through Saturday afternoon followed by snowier conditions on Sunday. Have fun!

Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Club

Grooming Today
Update: 2/22

Skier Update: Trail is ‘ groomed’ – not perfectly smooth corduroy, more “flattened and rolled”. Occasionally, there is a classic cross-country track, sometimes not. Certainly a nice hour and bit around the golf course with great views, a fun place to ski if you are looking for a new flat, groomed trail to try out.

Groomed with classic track on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

After days of sun and cold nights, the track has become quite firm. This morning, plan to refresh skate, and will probably not be able to make any improvement on the classic, which was last reset on Wednesday. Still should be in fairly decent shape. I believe skate should be very good.

  • Get Outside: Early Season Skiing and More in Jackson Hole
While many of us dream of clipping into our skis for early-season skiing in Jackson Hole, this November, you can still see the roots and rocks beneath your feet. A forecast predicts another 3 inches of snow this weekend in Jackson, with a few more inches expected into Thanksgiving week, and we’re all ready for it. Until then, we patiently wait for the snow to fall, fill in nicely, and for temperatures to drop, creating… Read More
