Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance joins Old Bill’s Fun Run!
For over a decade, skiers, snowshoers, fat bikers and dog walkers have been using JHNordic.com* to find trails and information about non-motorized winter recreation in the Greater Teton area. As a freshly minted nonprofit, you can now support the Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance through Old Bill’s Fun Run.
From seasoned Nordic skiers to curious beginners, there is a trail experience out there for everyone. Find your trail on this free community resource at jhnordic.org.
Whether you recreate on Togwotee Pass or in Grand Teton National Park, Teton Canyon or Emily’s Pond, the Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance is building community and promoting stewardship of winter trails on both sides of the Tetons.
Help your friends and neighbors get out and get moving on winter trails. Your gift at Old Bill’s goes even further to keep this community resource free for all to use.
*JHNordic.com is our original site. We added jhnordic.org when we incorporated as a nonprofit.
Six PT-approved exercises for stretching and strengthening Nordic skiers
Written by Ella Hall at enjoywinter.com
You’re probably familiar with the saying, skiers are made in the summer. It’s the season to push big hours and build the base that will enable you to ski at your best come winter. In order to clock those big hours, your body needs to be able to adapt and absorb the training. Being proactive about stretching and strengthening to prevent injury can help you be ready to chase big training hours.
Emily Hyde, a third-year physical therapy student and former Division I cross-country ski racer, says some of the most common issues Nordic skiers might experience during summer training are: low-back Six PT-Approved Exercises to Strengthen Nordic Skiers.
August Nature News: With warm and dry conditions, Jackson Hole welcomes monsoonal moisture of August
Provided by The Hole Hiking Experience
August is traditionally the hottest month of the year in Jackson Hole and the month began with temperatures nearing the 90’s. July was mostly hot and dry, so vegetation is a bit crisp throughout the valley. August and September are the primary wildfire months and with the current dry conditions, the fire danger is high. We all need to be extra careful. Fortunately, August brings the potential of monsoonal moisture from the southwest and we have already enjoyed a few wonderful afternoon showers to quench the dry landscape.
Field Facts
- August is berry time! There are lots of edible varieties to taste if you can properly identify them. Some of my favorites are thimbleberry, huckleberry, serviceberry and gooseberry.
- Mating season will begin soon so be mindful of male moose and elk since they can be feisty during the fall rut.
Backcountry Tips
- Shortcutting trails causes erosion. Josie’s Ridge near town has so many new trails that the Forest Service had rocks brought in to deter this. Come on folks, let’s reduce impact and stay on the trails.
- Single tracks should be used in single file to avoid widening.
- As we all head to the water, be aware of afternoon storms and wind. Weather can change quickly so stay near the shore on the larger lakes.
Trail Suggestion
August is the height of berries and fireweed. Hiking options are endless this time of the summer and a personal favorite is the Teton Pass area. Hiking out Phillips Ridge in early August is a great time to catch the blooming Fireweed. Evening excursions at String Lake in Grand Teton Park is always great when it’s hot, there are fewer people and still lots of sun.
JHSC Alumni Spotlight: Kim Hunt
Love endurance, long distances, and training? Then you have a lot in common with Kim Hunt (née Svendsen). We are sharing her story posted this month on the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club. Kim leads some of the Women in the Tetons Nordic ski events which are a fun way to gather and ski.
Hunt moved to Jackson Hole in 7th grade from California. She spent her middle school years exploring everything Jackson had to offer, and then when high school began she discovered the ultimate sport through Joe Burnfield – Cross Country Nordic skiing. As a former runner and alpine skier, Hunt found success and instant love in this demanding endurance sport practically immediately; she took home the State Championship in her first year as a freshman in high school! More importantly, she finally found her sport where she could be competitive and build on her existing strength and endurance.
