Trail Report from Shooting Star: Trails are in good shape and should provide enjoyable skiing. Look for periods of wintery weather throughout the week, bringing light daily accumulations. Enjoy!

Fast Conditions PSA

The sign in the middle of this photo says it all: Be Nice. Slow Down. Say Hi. With the warm days and cold nights the trails have been setting up hard and fast, providing extra speed to skiers and bikers alike.

Whether you’re gliding or riding, please be mindful of your fellow trail users, including those on foot. A little awareness goes a long way in keeping our shared spaces safe and enjoyable for everyone. Let’s all keep our heads up, kindly communicate, and make the most of these super fun conditions!

Winter Trails Day Recap

Thank you to all who participated in Winter Trails Day at Cache Creek on Saturday, March 1. Thanks especially to Friends of Pathways for sponsoring the event, Karen D. for representing JH Nordic, and all of the JH Nordic Alliance Members who made the day special. It really does take a village and we are so lucky to have such an enthusiastic and knowledgeable community!

Waxing Tips for Contrasting Conditions

A Q&A with Ian Harvey, US brand manager for TOKO Wax

Q: How would you wax if going for a 3 hour ski when some will be in the woods and rest in open areas?

IH: I’m assuming if starting in the morning the snow temps for both areas would be close, but the open area snow temps would rise quickly due to sun exposure while the snow temps in the forested areas would not rise as fast, if at all.

You need to establish which condition you want to wax for. I like to consider how much time will be spent in the open vs woods and how slow each one would be in relation to one another. For example if the course is 50/50% wooded vs open and the snow in the woods is going to be fast corn snow but in the open areas slower slush, I’d wax for the slush while also having had hardened my base so the wax is resilient against the friction in the woods.

Or conversely, if the woods have super cold dry slow powder and the open areas have faster not so cold powder because of sun exposure, and the course is 50/50%, I’d wax for the cold slow powder in the woods. Basically wax for the section that will cost you most time and energy on the skis.
