Avalanche Awareness, Even on Valley Trails

With so much new snow recently, winter trail users need to exercise caution when recreating on trails and terrain around steep slopes. According to the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center an Avalanche Warning is in effect, beginning on Saturday 12/28 at 12pm until Sunday 12/29 at 6pm.

Where to enjoy winter trails with all this snow?

  • Groomed trails offer soft packed surfaces, ideal for Nordic classic skiing.
Consider using your wider classic skis to stay on the surface, even on groomed trails.
  • Fat bikes will do best on firmer trails and pathways and should avoid soft trails to prevent leaving tire ruts.
  • Snowshoes are excellent for venturing into untracked snow, but it’s deep out there! You may travel a shorter distance and exert more energy then what you’re used to. Same goes for for BC Nordic skiing on untracked snow and trails.

Be sure to dress in layers. Winter temps may be cold, but you’ll warm up quickly!

2024’s Final Flourish : Fresh Snow

Oh, what magic two feet of fresh snow can bring to the world! Valley trails have been utterly transformed into a winter wonderland, as if Mother Nature herself had taken a painter’s brush dipped in white and swept it across the landscape. There’s an energy in the air, crisp and invigorating, calling out to adventurers, wanderers, and dreamers alike to don their layers and step into the snowy symphony of the great outdoors.

This is the time to lace up your boots, clip into those skis, or simply tread softly and marvel at the scene around you. Picture this: bald eagles perched majestically overhead, their keen eyes scanning the ground below. Moose foraging on willow branches, coyotes padding quietly in the distance, and elk grazing in peace. The snow itself tells a story, with delicate tracks crisscrossing its surface—a fleeting memoir of nature’s visitors, quickly covered by the next gentle snowfall.

The trails beckon, groomed to perfection for smooth gliding, while others remain untamed and wild, promising adventure for those who seek it. These last days of 2024 offers the perfect excuse to embrace the season’s gifts and lose yourself in the serene beauty of winter.

So grab your gear, take a deep breath of that cool, pine-scented air, and let the snow be your guide. Whether you’re skiing, snowshoeing, or simply walking, let this fresh snowfall remind you of the joy in small miracles, the wonder of wildlife, and the simple pleasure of moving through the world on a canvas of sparkling white.
