Teton Valley
Fee: $0.00
Access:
Pine Creek Pass offers a serene nordic trail often undiscovered by locals, conveniently accessible even from Jackson Hole. The route offers flexibility, with a customizable distance. Even at 2 miles out, enjoy stunning views northeast to the Tetons and northwest to the Big Hole Mountains.
Description:
From Victor ID, take Hwy ID 33 and turn east onto Hwy ID 31 towards Swan Valley ID.
Pine Creek Pass summit is 7 miles, and there's a spacious car park on the south side.
Trailhead: Find the winter trailhead on the far south-east corner of the car park, marked by a visible snowmobile trail.
Winter Conditions: The trail's width allows side-by-side skiing for two, dog companionship, and safe passage for snowmobiles if encountered. The trail starts at an elevation of 6780 feet and usually maintains good snow conditions into spring. Snow softens in the sun, so plan your picnic accordingly and start the return before it becomes slushy.
Notes for Dog Owners: Leashed dogs are allowed on this trail. Please be courteous and remember to pick up after your pets.
Summer Conditions: In the summer, the same trail follows NF253 for 5.6 miles to the summer trailhead. It serves as a pleasant, easy walk or a versatile route for gravel or mountain biking. Late spring and early summer grace the roadside fields with vibrant yellow flowers. Remember to embrace the beauty of Pine Creek Pass and consider contributing to its maintenance.
Directions:
The trail gently ascends along the ridgeline, providing a tranquil and remote skiing experience. Snowmobile tracks can assist skiers by breaking the trail, particularly mid-week when snowmobile traffic is minimal. The ski trail follows the summer National Forest service road NF253 for 5.6 miles to the summer trailhead (indicated as "trailhead" on NSGS topo maps).
