Access the trail via Hwy 191/189, 4 1/2 miles south of Hoback Junction toward Bondurant. Turn off at the "concrete Moose" on the right and drive approximately 1 mile to the summer trailhead over the snow-covered road. Park in a manner that allows space for other vehicles.
Description:
The RimRock Ranch Trail in the Wyoming Range offers a scenic journey through varied terrain, from open pastures to dense aspen glades and old-growth pine forests. The trail climbs progressively through these landscapes, eventually reaching Adams Pass, which provides panoramic views of Beaver Mountain to the east and Willow Creek Valley to the south. Along the trail, hikers may encounter evidence of a past landslide and ancient pine trees.
Skiing Experience: The trail offers a moderate skiing experience, with uphill sections followed by gradual descents. Ski tracks are often visible, especially on less snowy days. The return trip features a pleasant downhill slope, making for an enjoyable ski back.
Winter Conditions: The trail may be marked by snowmobile tracks, providing a groomed path for skiing. Winter conditions can vary, so be prepared for changing snow conditions and weather.
Fat Bikers: Fat biking may be feasible, depending on snow conditions and trail grooming.
Dog Owners: Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash. Be mindful of wildlife in the area.
Summer Conditions: In summer, the trail offers opportunities for hiking with scenic views. Be aware of potential wildlife encounters and changing weather conditions.
Directions:
Beginnings: From the car park area, locate the small trailhead to the east (left facing up the drainage), beyond an old wood ranch fence. Begin traversing uphill from here.
Uphill Stretch: After climbing approximately 100 yards, the trail joins a wider forest service road, well-marked by snowmobile tracks, leading south-southeast through open pasture and aspen glades.
Views: Enjoy views of Beaver Mountain to the east and Willow Creek Valley to the south from Adams Pass, reached at mile 2.6.
Return: Retrace your path back to the trailhead.
