Responsible Recreation: Winter Trails Forum Recap from TVTAP
What do snowshoers, fatbikers, mechanized users and nordic skiers all have in common? Trails, of course. On January 7th we hosted the annual Winter Trails Forum at Highpoint Cider. We had representatives from the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, JH Nordic Alliance, Mountain Bike the Tetons, Grand Targhee Ski and Snowboard Club, the U.S. Forest Service- Teton Basin Ranger District, and AMPL. With our crew of panelists, they were able to share information about winter wildlife closures, registration stickers, dog usage, upcoming events, avalanche awareness, plans for future grooming and trails, and partnerships.
Of the 30+ participants at Highpoint, many asked questions about trail use, etiquette, and interacting with users from other trail groups. We heard about the difference between policy (generally enforceable rules) and etiquette (generally social practices that help everyone have a good time). Many highlighted the importance of greeting others, especially other user groups, with a ‘hello!’ and a smile and then engaging in curious conversation to learn more about how or what they are doing. Keeping these things front of mind while recreating in the winter, in particular at multi-use trailheads like Teton Canyon, will help ensure everyone is respected and can recreate effectively. We were encouraged to think about impact: your impact on the land, your impact on wildlife, and your impact on other trail users. Lots of people love getting outside to recreate in winter in different ways and that is what actually brings all the people together! Remember you’re outside in a beautiful place… and that the trail will very likely be groomed again in 24-48 hours.
Thank you again to Highpoint Cider, our panelists, and curious recreators for a lively evening of conversation and camaraderie!
