Daily Trail Report for 3.01.26.

The weather in March is often like what we’ve been experiencing in Jackson Hole and Teton Valley this whole winter… unpredictable. When things get weird out there it’s good to have a plan and be willing to be flexible during times of uncertainty. Be sure to check the forecast and the grooming reports right before you head out on your adventure. And trust that winter will linger at the higher elevation areas (Targhee, Teton Canyon, Grand Teton National Park, Trail Creek, Turpin). There is still snowy fun to be had around here!

General Weather – Mixed

Mountain Weather is forecasting some soggy days ahead. It looks like the rain/snow line will be lower than anyone wants but there is a chance of accumulating snow on the upper elevation trails.

Cross Country Ski Care

These next few days may be well suited for giving your skis a little TLC so you can keep skiing fast when ideal conditions return. Ian Harvey of Toko shared the following tips for keeping cross country skis clean and fast.

The most common issue using waxless skis (aka step skis or fishscale skis) is snow sticking to the base and then sticking to itself. And the most common reason for this happening is that the base, especially the area containing the tread pattern, is dirty. Snow sticks to dirt like crazy and then the snow sticks to itself. When the bases are dirty like that, there is no liquid or treatment that will help a lot. The key is to clean the heck out of your bases, especially in the nooks and crannies of the tread pattern. The best method is good ole elbow grease combined with hot soapy water and a nylon scrub brush.

Once you have the step zone clean, then it’s easy. Just use a liquid treatment such as Grip n Glide wax which will make the glide zones glide faster and will repel snow from sticking to the grip zone. But remember, any treatment will only be so effective if the grip zone is dirty. Moral of the story, CLEAN YOUR BASES.

Once the skis have been cleaned thoroughly, they should perform well in basically any type of snow except for hard ice. In that case you need to wait until it warms up a bit for the snow to soften up, even a little, then your skis should grip just fine.

Go have fun on your skis, snowshoes, fat bike or feet!
