Western Wyoming Avalanche Advisory

Strong winds, warming temperatures and heavy snowfall have created very dangerous conditions at all elevations. Natural avalanche activity occurred today and may become widespread, especially during the overnight. Large avalanches could impact roadways in the river canyons, on Teton Pass and beneath buttes and steep hillsides. Steep hillsides, steep banks and road cuts have and are likely to slide. Slides are possible on steep slopes that may not normally slide. The general avalanche hazard is high at all elevations. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. – B-T Avalanche Center

Highlights from the Nordic Recreational Masters Clinic

Thursday morning was an excellent time (lull between the snow storms!) to get out on Classic cross-country skis to perfect one’s classic ski technique , hosted by the JH Ski Club at Teton Pines Nordic Center. Coach Scott Horn led 11 skiers in drills, practice and some nice skiing. We practiced the diagonal stride, double poling, short-step uphill, downhill strategies too.
The group was inspired by the form and technique in this video showing some of the world’s top classic racers: check it out if you want to see superb classic form. youtu.be/Ba7cicPZxB4
Our final clinic for the season is Thursday Feb 28th – Skate Ski  -11-12:30.
Drop-in: $35 -includes full day trail pass and Master’s clinic; $30 for Teton Pines nordic pass holders
Please RSVP to info@jhnordic.com so we can be sure to have an extra coach as needed… bring a friend if you like.

Trail Creek Report

The Official Map!

The Moose Chase is nearly here and above is the Official 2019 Moose Chase map, as usual in the grooming report clicking on the image will result in a higher resolution image.  You might be thinking that with all the snow we have received as of late that just sitting around the fire Saturday morning might be the best plan; but you would be sorry as it should be a great day, get those registrations in!

Today’s grooming was rather bizarre with quite positive results.  In the early part of grooming the foot of fresh heavy snow was flowing around the tiller a bit.  There was a brief period as we passed through freezing that things almost stopped working but then as temperatures continued to warm a little more the snow was flowing and compacting quite nicely.  Two Pisten Bully passes of the Moose Chase Course with fresh classic tracks were made today and conditions are all in all quite nice and firmer than you would think.  The only downside is that the warm temps are causing the trees to shed snow, branches, needles, etc. so you might encounter a bit of detritus on the snow.

Look for grooming early tomorrow morning finishing hopefully before 10 AM course inspection, a couple of evening passes Friday night, and then an early morning pass to buff everything out just before the Moose Chase.

Groomer’s choice for today is the Moose Chase Course.

Shooting Star Grooming Report
Last Updated: 2/13

Storm skiing will be the story over the next three days as a potentially fierce winter weather system pushes through. Anticipate trails to accumulate snow after our morning preparations. Classic style skiing will likely be the more enjoyable adventure choice during this period for combating the ever changing conditions. Enjoy!

Next Update: Saturday
