Trail Creek Report

A Very Happy Pisten Bully!
Pisten Bully’s love lots of cold deep snow, the deep part covers up all those nasty rocks and stumps and gives a nice cushion to the tracks as they chew through our trails, and the cold part makes the snow flow like silk through the tiller into some lovely lines of corduroy. Both ample snow and chilly temperatures were in abundance today which made that Pisten Bully very happy indeed.
As of 1:15 PM the temperature was -8ºC/18ºF with a mostly cloudy sky and light breezes. When all was said and done the recent storm dumped about 10-16 inches of snow which was more than enough to attack the East Fields. Today’s Pisten Bully grooming was 2-3 passes with fresh classic tracks on all field trails, and all woods trails except for the National Forest. Not because of a lapse in funding but more because of the exhaustion of the daily diesel allotment (and the groomer’s ability to sit in the cab for too long) the only National Forest trail to be groomed was a single pass loop out and back to the Old Pass Road.
All in all, skiing is a little soft but incredibly beautiful which should make for a great outing if you have time for one last ski in 2018.
Groomer’s choice for today is Armin’s.

Status of USFS Winter Operations
A note from the Forest Service: As you know, the Forest Service is included in the Government Shutdown. Therefore, the majority of our folks are furloughed and the offices are closed. However, we will be able to provide limited services with a focus on public safety. This includes:
- The BT Avalanche Center will continue to issue forecasts
- Plowing will continue at Granite, Gros Ventre, Mosquito Creek and Cache Creek (but may not be as frequent)
- Snow ranger patrols will continue on a limited basis (this includes Cache and Game and our snowmobile patrols)
- Jay will continue to cover Teton Pass
- The ambassadors will continue covering Cache and Game (since they are not technically FS volunteers)
Thank you for your support of our winter program and your patience. Hopefully we will return to full operations soon.

No Grooming New Year’s Day.
Grooming Taggart to South Jenny Lake Lake on Wednesday this week.
12/30
With all the new snow, bring your classic XC skis for a fine ski of creamy, wind-blown snow over last Friday’s groomed tracks.
12/29
Had a nice day in the park. Tracks were pretty good, thanks to special efforts by the GTNP groomer. Unfortunately the tracks were sort of broken up during the day, never had a chance to set up. But what a blast – good grip, really good glide. 25km of fun!
In spite of the government shutdown, grooming will continue on Fridays and Tuesdays, thanks to the support of Grand Teton National Park Foundation and community support.
Note that there are no services in GTNP in winter, although Dornan’s is open for lunch, drinks. Please take care not to walk on the groomed trail between Taggart and Signal Mountain, and remind others courteously not to walk on the trails. The normal Trail signs are in for repair after last weeks wind storm, so visitors may not be aware that the groomed trail is reserved for Nordic skiers.
Doesn’t get any better than this! Head up to the Signal Mtn side of the Taggart to Signal groomed trail for beautiful fresh grooming!

Skier report: Trails are groomed perfectly for skate and classic. Some minor snow drifts on the center trails due to the north windlass in the day, which should be gone with the next grooming Tuesday morning
12/30 @ 7pm
Conditions at the Pines are great! We are groomed for both Classic and Skate. The snow conditions are incredible right now so please come and ski with us this week!

Shooting Star Grooming Report
Last Updated: 12/31 @ 9:30am
The trails received multiple passes to assist w/compacting the new snow. A cold front will be passing through today, bringing winds and falling temperatures throughout the day. Drifting may likely occur as the current snow is very “dry” and shifts around easily. If the winds do subside, skiing should be good. Bundle up!

Cross Country/Fat Bike 15k: XC OPEN (Last groomed AM 12/30), Fat Bike CLOSED.
The last report for 2018, and it sure is a good one. 18″ in the last 24 hours with 12″ of those after lifts’ closure puts this storm’s total at 24
inches in 48 hours.
Mother Nature is making her mark – fresh blower at 7% water to snow, cold temperatures and significantly clearer skies than yesterday. She
wants to know if you can handle this, if you’ll appreciate it and if she should keep it coming in 2019. Let’s show her what we want, or rather
what our souls need in this coming year. Close this report, throw on an extra layer and head on up here!

Half Moon Tie-In, Kelly Park, Kelly Tie-In, Upper & Lower Surveyor, Tree Loop, Moose Ridge, Flatline, and Old Road Trail have all been groomed this morning. Waiting for more snow to do Heart Attack. About 1/2″ of new snow overnight. 7F degrees at the Nordic Equipment Building. Road plowed, a lot of skier traffic – drive with care, always. Watch out for kids and dogs in the White Pine parking lot, especially at road crossings. There are Nordic skiers parking at the lower end, and alpine skiers near the lodge. Drivers, please slow down going to/from/through the White Pine parking lot – a dog got hit yesterday by a truck driving too fast (the dog is ok). There are moose on Moose Ridge – give wildlife their space. The CCC and Golf Course trails were groomed yesterday and should be fair skiing, with a heavy dusting of snow on them. Parking areas are plowed. Golf Course Club House is open for meals and restroom. Lakeside Lodge is also open for meals and lodging. See links below for links to their websites for more info on days and times for open hours and services through the winter.

I ran a lap around the track this morning. There was about 6″ of new snow which I packed down Sunday afternoon and again this morning. The classic tracksetter got iced up so the classic track is set but is somewhat shallow. The skate lane is fairly soft, but smooth. Enjoy.
