Access the trail via Antelope Flats Road, 5.4 miles north of Kelly, WY, within Bridger-Teton National Forest. Park in the designated parking area.

Description:

Shadow Mountain trail offers a scenic journey through Bridger-Teton National Forest, with panoramic views of Jackson Hole and the Grand Teton. The trail begins with a snow-covered, snowmobile-tracked path across the flat, leading to the base of Shadow Mountain. From there, a well-marked USFS wood sign indicates the trailhead, which heads southeast through aspen trees. The trail features switchbacks, periodic viewpoints, and gradual slopes, making it suitable for classic skiing. At the summit, enjoy vistas overlooking Ditch Creek drainage to the east.

Skiing Experience: The trail offers a moderate skiing experience, with manageable grades and occasional steeper sections. Ski tracks are usually packed by snowmobiles or cross-country skiers. Downhill skiing can be fast, so skiers should be prepared to control their speed.

Winter Conditions: The trail is usually packed by snowmobiles or cross-country ski tracks, providing a groomed surface. Winter conditions can vary, so be prepared for changing snow conditions and weather.

Fat Bikers: Fat biking is feasible on the trail during the winter months when conditions allow.

Dog Owners: Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash. Be mindful of other trail users and wildlife.

Summer Conditions: In summer, Shadow Mountain becomes a popular hiking and mountain biking trail. The well-maintained forest service road offers relatively quick drying after rain and snow, providing opportunities for outdoor recreation with magnificent views and colorful autumn foliage.

Directions:


Beginnings: From the parking lot, follow the snowmobile-tracked trail north across the flat for ½ mile until reaching the base of Shadow Mountain.

Uphill Stretch: Head southeast from the flat, following the summer jeep/service road marked by a USFS wood sign. The trail rises immediately through aspen trees.

Views: Enjoy panoramic views of Jackson Hole and the Grand Teton from periodic viewpoints along the trail.

Trail Options: At the summit, the trail continues north for over 4 miles, winding back to the valley floor through the forest, offering a longer loop option.

Return: Retrace your path back to the parking lot or complete the loop variation described above.
