Tech Tips from Pros: Scotty McGee with Peak Performance

What’s better than getting tech tips from the pros? Absolutely nothing. Scotty McGee has enjoyed cross-country skiing since 1983, so he knows a thing or two. Scotty explores techniques that could benefit your performance on winter trails whether on classic XC skis or skate skis.

  • The Stages of Diagonal Stride
  • V2 Alternate
  • Double Poling

Emily’s Pond Levee, also known as the Dike, is a popular local trail located on the shore of the Snake River. It’s easily accessible and worth the consideration for exploring when temperatures are so low. The trail is flat and well-maintained, except for the first 80 yards which have a slight slope towards the river. It’s a great spot for a quick workout with lots of views. Whether you prefer skate skiing, classic skiing, fat biking, or winter walking Teton Co/Jackson Parks & Rec maintains the trail and keeps it in excellent condition – it was freshly groomed yesterday! Parking is available on-site with public restroom access.

February Newsletter from our friends at Hole Hiking

February started with a bang with a winter weather advisory, big wind, and lots of snow! The term “atmospheric river” has been around for about 30 years and is defined as a “phenomenon of concentrated water vapor in the atmosphere.” It’s certainly a term that I hear more often these days. With the current storm system, it means lots of moisture mixed with wind and warm temperatures, and dare I say it, rain. During winter months in Jackson Hole, we don’t like to say that word. I usually say “the R word” to not jinx the weather because it not only wreaks havoc on the streets but has a devastating impact on the snowpack.

Wax Tips from Dan Streubel, local racer & Toko Tech Team Member

Racing the Teton Ridge Classic?

Forecast/Conditions: Friday overnight low of 19 with chance of 1-2” of new snow. Saturday temperature at start low 20’s with a high of 24 and 80% chance of 1” of new snow. Expect cold dry snow conditions with minimal glazing on a moderately firm machine groomed track.

Glidewax: Apply BP Blue Hot Wax, scrape and brush, then apply HP Blue Hot Wax, scrape and brush.

Gripwax: Roughen base with 150 grit sandpaper, iron in Nordic Base Wax Green, cork smooth, let cool. Then apply 3-4 alternating layers of Nordic GripWax Red, and Nordic Grip Wax Blue, corking smooth between layers and finishing with Blue.

Structure: A fine structure covered by one pass with the Blue Structurite tool after scraping and brushing the final Hot Wax will best suit these conditions.

Remember to check the avy forecast!

It’s not just skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers who need to check the avy forecast! Nordic skiers, and snowshoers, can find themselves in gullies and runoffs that could be terrain traps for avalanches. Remember to check the daily forecast at The Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center before you plan your outing, especially since conditions have been so variable of late.

Thanks for a GREAT Day at the FREE Ski, Fat Bike & Snowshoe Day at Turpin!

An old French proverb by Jean-Baptiste Massieu says that “gratitude is the memory of the heart,” and goodness do we have a lot to be grateful for!

A huge thank you to all of the JH Nordic Alliance sponsors, members, volunteers, we would not have been able to facilitate the merriment without you. Thanks to Turpin Meadow Ranch for hosting.
