Peak Performance – Cross Country Mountain Adventure Guide Course
Learn and practice the skills of teaching cross country skiing and guiding skate ski backcountry tours and light touring with waxless metal-edged skis.
Veteran coach and guide, Scotty McGee (see bio below), will train you to manage clients in a backcountry setting in the breathtaking and wild Togwotee Pass area during this spring cross country skiing adventure guide training course. Using skate, classic and adventure touring gear. Expand your skiing skills and become a more savvy backcountry traveler.
Curriculum includes:
- Light touring travel, and ultralight speed travel when crust conditions allow
- Route selection, navigation, and route finding skills to inform your future adventuring
- Uphill and downhill ski techniques
- Daily routes will vary in length from 4-15 miles, with skill, fitness, conditions and ambition. We can accommodate more skill levels with more participants, so spread the word and invite your friends!
- Routes will avoid avalanche terrain, until stability is near 100%, as it often is in spring melt-freeze conditions.
Pricing:
Early Bird $393 includes coaching/guiding/training.
Not included: air or ground travel to JAC, equipment/rental (we have a good selection, but not exhaustive), pocket snacks, beverages.

Logistics
Travel: Meet in Jackson, 8am on May 14. Each day, we’ll research routes, conditions and weather and develop a tour plan. We’ll take turns playing the role of guide with ample feedback and opportunities to learn from both mistakes and others.
Lodging: On your own. We can supply you with ideas.
Equipment: Rentals and Packing List
Day Tour: Small pack (+/- 25 liter) with water, personal pocket snacks, extra layer(s) and room enough for lunch. Guide kit: first aid, extras/spares, maps or devices, and knowhow.
Skate, Classic, and NNN BC setups: Larger baskets recommended for light touring days. Rental equipment available – please contact us with specific equipment inquiries or to reserve rentals.
Personal wear: Clothing for temps from 10℉-60℉. Base layer leggings, synthetic sun hoody, midweight fleece, light puffy, light fleece zip-up hoodie, lightweight Gore-tex or similar shell jacket; Shell touring or nordic pant, warm and cold weather gloves/mittens; nordie hat, ball cap, and buff, Sunglasses
Casual spring mountain wear: long pants, big puffy, warm hat and gloves
BIOS:
Scotty McGee is a four term PSIA National Nordic Team member and two term coach. He teaches Cross Country (skate and classic), Telemark and Alpine Skiing. A veteran guide with over 80 summits of the Grand Teton, he holds avalanche training certifications and backcountry guiding credentials with the AMGA. He is an accomplished pioneer of new routes with over 25 Teton Range crossings, including ultra-light and -fast skate ski mountaineering routes.
