February 8, 2023 Nature Update

Provided by Cathy Shill founder of The Hole Hiking Experience
https://www.holehike.com/

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps, it says, “Go to sleep darlings, til the summer comes again.” -Lewis Carroll

What a weekend with a bright full moon, fresh snow, sun and warmer temperatures.  Hope you all saw the full moon which was big and bright. In the early mornings, it shined in the western sky.

Each tour, our guides choose an interpretive theme to share with others. We pick a topic that inspires us and share supportive facts to give the tour fluidity and cohesion. A favorite subject is the snow world which is a temporary ecosystem that is created each year in Jackson Hole. Nivean means relating to snow and snow is referred to as the nivean environment. As we experience winter, we share characteristics of this environment with an introduction, supporting facts and conclusion.

The nivean environment is divided into the subnivean, intranivean and supranivean. Subnivean is the area between the ground and the bottom of the snowpack.

Once winter begins and we have about 6-8 inches of snow, the ground becomes insulated, and temperatures remain close to freezing or 32 degrees. Many rodents live in the subnivean zone moving through snow tunnels, feeding on grasses and creating living areas. Intranivean is within the snow so where weasels or grouse will tunnel. Snow provides insulation and protection from predators. Supranivean is above the surface of the snow. Moose and bison are examples of animals that live and survive above the snowpack.

Nature shares a story and we share that story with others. Connecting to the landscape enriches our lives and deepens our passion for nature. This new understanding builds stewardship and the wish to protect our natural resources.  As Chief Seattle said in 1854, “This we know….the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected..” It’s a joy to share nature, deepen connections and create lasting memories. www.holehike.com 307.690.4453

ICYMI – JH Nordic Beers and Banter at JH History Museum Panel
Recording now available!

Hosted by the Jackson Hole History Museum and Morgan Jaoen (ED), featured an outstanding panel of long time Jackson Hole local Nordic skiers: Gwenn and Don Wadsworth, Sean O’Malley, Nancy Johnstone, Linda Merigliano.

“Last week’s program was magical, it was incredible to hear your stories and see you connect with the audience. The laughter, applause, and positive comments afterwards certainly indicate how much everyone enjoyed the program.”

Whitewash
The wind and snow were howling at Trail Creek this morning. Believe it or not, grooming did take place, even though it might be hard to tell by looking! Wind and snow basically erased my first pass around the fields by the time I got to the second pass, so skiing may be a bit rustic today, but since temperatures were hovering around 24 degrees outside, it shouldn’t be an unpleasant experience; just a bit more of a workout than might have been expected. The Stadium, Skyview, Lollipopper Land and Nordic X all got touchups, as well.

An unusual Bamboo Forest was spotted at Trail Creek earlier this week; the Teewinot Team got some great practice, dodging through these obstacles and improving their precision and agility. Great job, Coach Libby, and thanks for the photos!

Groomer’s choice is the wooded Moose Chase course.

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 2/6
The past 7+ days brought us deep snow followed by very frigid temperatures. This combination makes for a crumbly and not very pliable snow profile. GCM recently has been doing aggressive blade work and grooming to assist with releveling the track after the recent weather events. Due to the snow profile currently being less pliable and crumbly, skiers may see cleats marks or voids that aren’t filled in. Most of the voids are esthetic and won’t impact skiing. However, during this transitional snowpack, there could be an occasional awkward spot next to tight corners or where heavy drifts routinely occur. Please pay attention to Wednesday’s weather, as new cold front will push through bringing breezy/windy and drifty conditions. Overall, skiing should continue to be very enjoyable this week with calmer weather returning Thursday. Enjoy! Next Update will be Friday.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.
