The Snow is Falling

The trails are fresh and its time to get out there and explore!

Here is a powder day on Nordic Ski. Great to escape the crowds into your own winter wonderland. This trip went from Moose-wilson road to LSR Preserve.

Thank you Karen D. for the trip report and the photos.

For more day ventures and places to check out this weekend see the link below. From Togwotee, the Gros Ventres, Driggs and Grand Teton see all the pathways in the area.

Finding a Foothold for Nordic Skiing in Rural Alaska

Photographs and Text by Seth Adams | New York Times

Much like our JH Ski Club Nordic Program, serving 130 local children in Jackson Hole, as well as Coombs Outdoors, this beautiful story in the New York Times highlights connecting with local youth through Nordic skiing.

It was minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and a lot of the children were wearing jeans. They forgot to bring snow pants again. But they wanted to go skiing anyway, and that’s why we were there, so we took them skiing — even if a few of the less appropriately dressed kids turned back early.

I was in Nulato, a Koyukon Athabascan village of a couple hundred people that sits on the lower Yukon River in Alaska’s western interior, volunteering as a ski coach with a program called Skiku — a playful portmanteau of the Inupiaq word for ice, siku, and the English word ski.

Trail Creek Nordic

Racing Day 1!

Today is the first day of the two day western Wyoming/Eastern Idaho Nordic race at Trail Creek.  Today’s venue is classic with a start time of noon.  Covid safe spectators are welcome today, just wear your mask and keep your distance.

Tomorrow’s course is a short noon start freestyle sprint in the field by the cabin so skiing in the woods will be a go for non racers.  The tentative plan is for a quick groom of some of the woods trails tonight, working around setting the sprint course for tomorrow.

Groomer’s choice for today is to ski fast!

Teton Pines Nordic

With the new grooming snow cat, and an inch of soft snow, trails at The Pines were silky smooth, fast today. The JH Nordic Masters skate ski clinic was fun, practicing V2 technique and drills, and simply skiing!Check out the new snow cat for grooming perfection, just arrived this morning! We tested the before and after. The new groomed corduroy was silky smooth, nice and wide…will be a great bonus!

Daily grooming, wide corduroy skate ski lanes with well defined classic tracks make for excellent ski conditions. Skate and classic cross country ski/ boots/ pole rentals. If you want to explore Grand Teton NP and the Jackson Hole area on xc skis, we carry the must have xc ski trail guidebook for our region in the shop:

We got about 3-4 inches up here over night! Most we’ve gotten in a while. The trails will be quite soft today. If you’re new to skiing or wanting to refine your skills, book a ski lesson with our professional ski instructor Elee (she also does guided tours)! She is a wealth of knowledge and can help take your Nordic skiing, whether it be skate or classic, to the next level! To help with social distancing and to get you on the trails faster please purchase your trail passes and sign your waivers online in advance (see link below). As always, remember to recreate responsibly. Bring a mask as it is required to enter the lodge. Lunch and dinner are both by reservation only.
